Since 1999, Quinta de Ventozelo belongs to the Spanish group Proinsa. The property is located in the town of São João da Pesqueira, in the Upper Corgo, an ideal place in the heart of the Demarcated Region of the Douro, on the left bank of the river, overlooking the Pinhão Valley. Quinta de Ventozelo is one of the oldest quintas in the region, as well as one of the biggest and best located. Until the property was bought by Proinsa, it was producing Port wine in bulk for big shippers from Vila Nova de Gaia. The property has an area of more than 600 Ha. Some believe it is a secret: for us it is simply ancestral wisdom, which takes into account different grape varieties, the quality of the soil and sun exposure levels. The vinification of the Port wine still takes place in our traditional lagares (tanks made of stone) where grapes are foot crushed, providing Quinta de Ventozelo with a wide range of quality wines. Currently there are 11 25.000-litre stainless steel tanks, with controlled temperature. We are redesigning the vinification centre to increase the production capacity while guaranteeing the same Read more »

  • Quinta de Ventozelo Douro DOC Reserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite dark in the glass, and with the nose--sharp somewhat chemically--this one looks like a brute. On the palate, though, those thoughts diminish. It's quite easy going on the initial entry. Not terribly fruity and it flows easily over the tongue. Then on the sides and back of the tongue the tannin hits along with some heat. Suddenly, we'r... Read More

91 points. The first thing I notice about its aroma is how multilayered and complex it is. Its rich and almost jammy, with deep spicy aromas, Cameroon cigar leaves, and volcanic stone. Theres something like strawberry rhubarb pie, black currant scones, and the faintest touch of lavender and rosewood. Its immediately delicate and soft on the palate... Read More

  • Quinta de Ventozelo Red Blend Douro Tinto 2004

    Snoothrank:

88 points. This wines aroma is very strong and well defined. Its deep and spicy, with dark red fruit tones, chocolate covered blueberries and plum, combined with beautiful foresty aromas that make me think of fresh pine needles and rosemary flowers. A good spin in the glass brings out some black currant, charcoal, and a little bit of suede, with ... Read More

  • Quinta de Ventozelo Touriga Nacional Douro 2007

    Snoothrank:

If you've had a Port (a real one from Portugal) you are familiar with this grape whether you realize it or not. The tragedy is many wine savvy folks have never had the pleasure of experiencing a dry varietal version. Here is a great example of what his grape can do and at a great price to boot. This wine boasts macerated black and blueberries... Read More
