In the very earliest years of the 18th century, more than 150 years before the Port companies of Oporto began to build vineyards in the Upper Douro, a Scotsman named Robert Archibald travelled into the Douro. He acquired a perpetual lease on a wild and isolated property between Pinhao and Tua. Here he built a rudimentary shooting box from which he hunted wild boar and partridge in the surrounding countryside. Shortly after he began to plant a vineyard on his land and Quinta de Roriz started to produce wine. During the 20th century the Roriz wines continued to appear, but now associated to shippers' names. It is now, at the start of a new millennium, that Roriz has been re-established as an independent producer and it is intended to regain its position as one of the pre-eminent Quintas of the Douro. – Description from iskicm

  • While there are some tastings I do not look forward to each year, there are others that I can’t wait for. For the most part that means things like Barolo and northern Rhone Syrah, but it also includes the greatest set of value wines I get to sample each year; inexpensive Portuguese red wines! Now, admittedly that’s a pretty broad category of vino... Very nice "typical" Douro blend...60% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz; dark purple, zingy acidity, moderate tanins, and very pleasant to drink by itself or with food that has substance...oak notes are restrained allowing the fruit to shine Read More

  • In the coming weeks I’ll be writing up my experiences at ProWein 2014, the great Wine and Spirits show held in Dusseldorf Germany each year. This trade show, and it is just that, exclusive to the trade and that rule is strictly enforced, is one of the great experiences wine professional can indulge in each year. This year’s edition of the fair w... Read More

  • Quinta de Ventozelo Douro DOC Reserva 2009

Quite dark in the glass, and with the nose--sharp somewhat chemically--this one looks like a brute. On the palate, though, those thoughts diminish. It's quite easy going on the initial entry. Not terribly fruity and it flows easily over the tongue. Then on the sides and back of the tongue the tannin hits along with some heat. Suddenly, we'r... Read More

  • I’ve already written up my thoughts on some white wines tasted while in Portugal this past summer. I wanted to get that information out in front of you while it was still most pertinent, hot, and sunny.
