Purple Moon Winery

About  Purple Moon Shiraz:

The first bottle we tried, we could not believe how good the wine was for the price. We tried a couple more bottles, one of them was not good. We decided that was freakish so we bought 5 more bottles. Big mistake. Out of those, only one was good, the rest of them were not drinkable , I am being charitable. We read many negative reviews on this wine, but we didn't believe them because the first couple of bottles were so good. Mystery solved.

The lesson here is, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!" What is worse than a bad wine is an inconsistent wine that yanks your chains. Lesson well learned.

OK, at $3.99 a bottle, I was at first recluctant to review until just now as I popped the cork. Here goes -- The color is very dark showing some purple highlights (Hence the name?) The aroma was definitely a strong fruit bomb. Taste, fruity, a tad tart and Oakey with medium tannins (I love tannins) a tiny bit flat upon entry but immediately rep... Read More

This bottle was a gift so I did a completely blind tasting. Initially the wine smelled jammy. I could smell blueberry, plum and a hint of cassis. I feared the wine would be overcome with tannins, but it was wasn't. The top notes matched it's scent. I could definitly taste the blueberry, plum, and perhaps some blackberry. It was rather smo... At 3.99 (Trader Joe's), I wasn't expecting much. Decided it would pair nicely with the frozen tortellini and canned sauce I cooked for dinner after work, and working out. Plastic cork. Good idea. At first sniff, it was all blackberries, definitely fruity. Good legs, next surprise. Smooth on the tongue and no harsh tannins, definitely drink... Read More

Actually a blend, 77% Merlot, with Petite Syrah, Malbec and Petite Verdot. Deep garnet color, plums and berries on the nose. Cassis and cherries give way to slightly oaky finish. Read More

  • I´ve read a lot lately on biodynamic wines and how the position of the moon and other things can affect the vines growth or even the wine tasting, mostly on phylosophical grounds believing that "Biodynamics takes organic farming practices and wraps them as broader conception of the farm / the vineyard as a coherent organism, where inputs and out... • For the price you can't beat Purple Moon Shiraz. It's the only wine I'll buy at this price point but it's not bad to drink as a table wine.

For the price, it's a great bottle wine. Just a little something to have around the house. Picked it up at Trader Joes for $3.99. Wish I could be more descriptive but it's been about 2 weeks since I had it, just picked one up the other day but haven't opened it yet. Read More
