Aldo Conterno is known as the “King of Barolo” in Italy. Poderi Aldo Conterno is situated in Monforte d'Alba on the prized Bussia Soprano vineyard, in the heart of the Barolo region. The Conterno family has been producing and aging the great Piemontese wines for more than five generations. Aldo left his legendary brother at his father's cellar (the Giacomo Conterno estate) in 1969 to pursue his own winemaking interests and reputation, creating the wines of Poderi Aldo Conterno in the "Favot" cellar. The estate exclusively vinifies its own 25 hectacres of grapes. The Conterno brothers parted ways back in the late sixties to create their own styles of Barolo, Giovanni producing the more traditional style of the two. However, Aldo's wines are not considered modern; he still refuses to age them in small barriques. The wines are more fruit driven than the earthy wines of the Giacomo Conterno estate across town in Monforte. • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2004

    Snoothrank:

A 2 week maceration is followed by several months in stainless before being aged 28 to 30 months in Slavonian oak botte.A touch of drying grass greats the nose then is followed by very precise emerging notes of sea grass and menthol. The tight dark fruit emerge slowly and remain reticent in the glass but the menthol and mineral tones gain in imp... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2004

    Snoothrank:

This replaces the old Bussia Soprana bottling as with this vintage the fruit is now 80% Bussia and 20% from the commune of Barolo though they are contiguous parts of the same vineyard. The Barolo fruit used to go into the Favot but the vines have matured and are now producing juice worthy of being called Barolo. This macerates for 2-3 weeks in s... Read More

  • Conterno Chardonnay Bussiador 2005

    Snoothrank:

Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations are done in 100% new barrique with a light+ toast level. The highest part of the Favot estate to the northeast of the property from 30 year old vines. Opened at cellar temperature this had fairly explosive and complex aromatics. Starting off slowly with a touch of banana and sandy soil notes this quick... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Nebbiolo Barolo Cicala 1998

    Snoothrank:

Sweet and a touch beefy on the nose with spicy licorice tones and a gentle touch of woody/vanilla underlay. This gets a bit weird as bay leaf tones are joined by a strong buttery element and a bit of a cognac tone. Though round with good acids in the mouth, this is a bit muscularly styled with tannins that are a touch rustic though there is nice... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2004

    Snoothrank:

Very direct and focused on the nose with cherry in alcohol, a touch of beet root, bright woodsy tones of angelica root, nettle and soil notes with building strawberry fruit and a flourish of rose 3+Grippy tannins and strong acidity frame the ripe fruit but the wine remains very elegant 3Richly flavored in the mouth with wild cherry fruit edged w...
