Aldo Conterno is known as the “King of Barolo” in Italy. Poderi Aldo Conterno is situated in Monforte d'Alba on the prized Bussia Soprano vineyard, in the heart of the Barolo region. The Conterno family has been producing and aging the great Piemontese wines for more than five generations. Aldo left his legendary brother at his father's cellar (the Giacomo Conterno estate) in 1969 to pursue his own winemaking interests and reputation, creating the wines of Poderi Aldo Conterno in the "Favot" cellar. The estate exclusively vinifies its own 25 hectacres of grapes. The Conterno brothers parted ways back in the late sixties to create their own styles of Barolo, Giovanni producing the more traditional style of the two. However, Aldo's wines are not considered modern; he still refuses to age them in small barriques. The wines are more fruit driven than the earthy wines of the Giacomo Conterno estate across town in Monforte. Poderi Aldo Conterno on Snooth

  • Well the 2005 Barolos are tasted and I can’t help but think back to what I said last year. 2005 is a successful vintage that reflects terroir and winemaking more than weather and will need more time to be as approachable as 2004. This years tasting was a mixed crop and a challenge.  Many of the wines suffered from one defect or another, be thos... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2005

    Snoothrank:

AWE blind tasting - jammy, pencil shavings, some animale, furry, reticent, a bit ungenerous, and dried out, theres a sweetness here but not terribly fruity nor varietal, very savory, turns better on the finish, nice tannins ripe tannins, refreshing finish, clean, a small wine 86-87 Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Dolcetto Masante 2006

    Snoothrank:

A medium bodied, dark purple hue Dolcetto. Initially the nose is a little closed with chalk dust and faded fruit but with a little time an explosion of Blackberries, chestnuts and toast Wow. Juicy blackberries jam on the palate with spicy clove. The finish is long and chewy with a bit of burn from the teaming acidity that also makes this a gr... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2004

    Snoothrank:

Intensely perfumed in the glass with musky, porcini top notes and a deep forest floor underlay. There is a touch of deisel fume that whafts in and out but the sharp, intense fruits sweet and ripe with an edge of apricot to the red berry notes. This marries big power with elegance and presents intense wild strawberry fruit that is edged with spic... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2004

    Snoothrank:

A 2 week maceration is followed by several months in stainless before being aged 28 to 30 months in Slavonian oak botte.Unlike the stern Colonello this is flamboyant with intense floral tones, layered sappy fruits, sweet, gentle spice tones and a touch of espresso foam. In the mouth this is downright suave with very fine tannins and a broad mout... Read More
