Aldo Conterno is known as the “King of Barolo” in Italy. Poderi Aldo Conterno is situated in Monforte d'Alba on the prized Bussia Soprano vineyard, in the heart of the Barolo region. The Conterno family has been producing and aging the great Piemontese wines for more than five generations. Aldo left his legendary brother at his father's cellar (the Giacomo Conterno estate) in 1969 to pursue his own winemaking interests and reputation, creating the wines of Poderi Aldo Conterno in the "Favot" cellar. The estate exclusively vinifies its own 25 hectacres of grapes. The Conterno brothers parted ways back in the late sixties to create their own styles of Barolo, Giovanni producing the more traditional style of the two. However, Aldo's wines are not considered modern; he still refuses to age them in small barriques. The wines are more fruit driven than the earthy wines of the Giacomo Conterno estate across town in Monforte. • Poderi Aldo Conterno Nebbiolo Barolo Cicala 1995

    Snoothrank:

Pretty burnished red fruits on the nose over a bed of lightly minty, sandy soil tones. With air this turns decidedly fruity with classic wild cherry and rosehip notes. Bright in the mouth with fine acids and well managed tannins giving this fine balance. The mid-palate is full of savory, burnished black cherry fruit that is clean and bright with... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barbera Barbera d'Alba Conca Tre Pile 2006

    Snoothrank:

Sweet raspberry fruit, almost a touch of cream, high-toned, fresh, slightly gamy, spicy sandalwood, fresh a bit dull though, fine tannins. A bit diffuse on the mid-palate, nice structured feel on the back palate, a bit compressed, crisp tannin, fine finish, a bit dry but gains focus. Should improve. Read More

  • If one looks to Castiglione, as I did last week, for indications regarding the overall quality of a vintage, then one can look to Monforte for signs of the cracks in that vintage. In Monforte, one finds a very broad spectrum of producers experimenting with virtually every style of Barolo known. While some producers are consistently finding their... Read More

  • Hey all. I'm a wine reviewer, and just the other day I launched an article on my site about Dolcetto. The wines I featured were from Santa Barbara County, but I'm a big fan of this grape from New World and Old World producers. Does anyone have any recommendations/stories/opinions about Dolcetto? I'd like to get people talking about it. Cheers.If... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2004

    Snoothrank:

Honestly, I dont get all the hype. The nose showed red fruit, undergrowth and a bit of toast. On the palate I found strawberry, cooked orange like marmalade and tar but felt that it lost its heft on the mid-palate and ended feeling linier, restrained and a bit alcoholic. Possibly this is just the stage of its life but certainly not performing ve... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Gran Bussia 2000

    Snoothrank:

The 2000 Aldo Conterno, Barolo Granbussia, showed candied red fruit with cedar, leather, crushed fall leaves and a seductive Christmas spice on the nose. On the palate, it was full-bodied and juicy with ripe strawberry, tobacco, licorice and spice. The finish was long, with red fruit, yet clean, showing silky tannin. This is an approachable bott...
