Aldo Conterno is known as the “King of Barolo” in Italy. Poderi Aldo Conterno is situated in Monforte d'Alba on the prized Bussia Soprano vineyard, in the heart of the Barolo region. The Conterno family has been producing and aging the great Piemontese wines for more than five generations. Aldo left his legendary brother at his father's cellar (the Giacomo Conterno estate) in 1969 to pursue his own winemaking interests and reputation, creating the wines of Poderi Aldo Conterno in the "Favot" cellar. The estate exclusively vinifies its own 25 hectacres of grapes. The Conterno brothers parted ways back in the late sixties to create their own styles of Barolo, Giovanni producing the more traditional style of the two. However, Aldo's wines are not considered modern; he still refuses to age them in small barriques. The wines are more fruit driven than the earthy wines of the Giacomo Conterno estate across town in Monforte. Forum post in the topic Wines that Sing

  • Hard to say what it exactly is, but we've all had moments when wines were really open and "singing" maybe after a quick decant, or hours of air, they just started to open and catch fire. I can think of quite a few wines that stick out in this way, though it seems like a very unpredictable phenomenon. Also, what the heck is going on with wines th... Read More

  • Aldo Conterno Bricco Bussia Vigna Colonnello 1980

    Snoothrank:

A distinctive and gorgeous nose that brings together a bit of pink peppercorn spice with earth, licorice, dried herbs and angelica root fills the glass. Tis is the only wine that shows a bit of extra-ripeness to it with an early suggestion of raisin on the palate. The texture also shows in a armer style with a roundness and softness that the oth... • Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello 1989

    Snoothrank:

A bit of celery and bouillon is obvious on the nose, though there remains some lovely complexity with fine aromas of wood smoke, black tea, and dried rose petals slowly filling the glass along with a nice limestoney edge. Theres not much fruit left here, what remains is rather rough and rustic with lots of black spice and licorice flavors. This ... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Nebbiolo Barolo Cicala 1989

    Snoothrank:

Intensely aromatic with deep herbal accents to the core of spicy and dark fruit. There were notes of cocoa and brownies, along with some grilled beefy notes all supporting a core of jammy raspberry fruit that grew with air. Big red fruits greet the palate, which quickly gains focus offering up crisp cranberry and raspberry flavors that gained mi... Read More

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno Nebbiolo Barolo Cicala 2001

    Snoothrank:

Waxy, oaky and nutty on the nose with a very spicy dark chocolate, coffee aroma lifted with a touch of VA. Nice edgy red cherry fruit on entry, framed with wood spice then wood tannin throws this a touch out of balance, particularly on the long sweet oaky finish. Lots of jammy blackberry fruit with hint of mineral a bit muddy but pleasant overa... Read More

  • Barolo Riserva Granbussia. Poderi Aldo Conterno 2005

    Snoothrank:

Tight, muscular and angular on the mineral laced nose that shows excellent perfumes of rosehips, orange rind, dried flowers with a hint of iron and spice. This is gorgeous with excellent integration in the mouth. Just lovely with wide open fruit that shows a lightly burnished edge, with a light sweetness to the fruit but this is layered with s...
