The Pio Cesare winery was founded in 1881 by our great great-grandfather Cesare Pio. He was one of the very first wine producers to believe in the great potential and quality of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and in the other great wines of Piemonte. Cesare Pio, in the second portion of 1800s, was among the very first winemakers to produce these wines with a philosophy that was dedicated to the terroir and the strictest quality of the wine. For five generations, the Pio Cesare family has been producing traditional Piemontese wines in its ancient cellars, located in the center of the town of Alba.. The cellars walls date back to the Roman Empire period , 50 B.C. Recently, significant investments have been made to rebuild and restructure the cellars and the winery's facilities. A new fermentation cellar was built with a new racking by gravity area and a new barrel ageing room, 12 meters underneath the existing building and the Roman Walls. • DM - Interesting story regarding the Pio Cesare.  I didn't ask our guests what sort of history they had with the wine.  They knew the theme for the wine diner was Italian / pasta, so an Italian wine was expected.  Anyway, it was tasty.  It's probably not a good idea to drink so many bottles at one sitting, as we all know that our ability to dist... • The Pio Cesare was one of my dailies in the late '80s, early '90s when my wife and I would trade off creating our own versions of Italian dishes, and pull a bottle of it out of the case or two (usually with about a dozen years of bottle age on it) that was usually in the house to accompany. I was working very late hours in those days so she usua... Read More

  • Pio Cesare Barolo 2010

50% Ornato, 70% aged in botte Tight on the nose with floral aromas, a hint of wood spice, the sweet savoriness of fruitcake and dates and a bit of candied orange and lime rind. Showing a fair amount of power up front and fairly fruity in the classic dried fruit way, this has round ripe tannins and nice acidic cut on the palate. Theres good compl... Read More

  • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost...
