Englishman Henry Pike immigrated to South Australia in 1878 aboard the HMS Oakland. He settled in the small town of Oakbank in the Adelaide Hills and in 1886 established the family brewing business called H. Pike & Co. • When we talk about Zinfandel we often tend to focus on those most familiar to us. Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley, Amador County, and even Napa get their fair share of attention, though just as often we tend to gloss over some terrific wine producing regions. I’m sure that on the whole my coverage of Zinfandel this year will be equally lopsided ... Read More

  • Almost fruity by design, because that’s what we know you like. The natural, slightly bitter character of Malbec is being obscured, in those examples that through clonal selection, cropping, or vintage character still display it. In its place we’re increasingly finding the fruit that consumers have grown to expect from their wines. Not enough fru... Read More

  • Sometimes, I’m not exactly sure what my job is here at Snooth. I do get to review wine, which many people think is a glamorous and desirable thing to do. The truth is, it’s just a great vehicle for pissing people off. I can piss off producers by either not reviewing their wines or not reviewing their wines well, and I can piss off the consumers.... • As I mentioned when I introduced myself as part of Snooth's Mentor Program, I'm a wine educator. I teach wine at a culinary school, and I instruct classes at local shops around my area in the Triangle in North Carolina. It keeps me on my toes, for sure - no matter how many times I've taught a concept or tasted a wine, something new comes up. Mos... Read More
