Lot´s of work at the office and almost all the time left I usually spend tasting wine from everywhere. However, I managed to get a few days outta town. As I stated earlier, I´m be in New York City from the 29th of november until december, 8th, which gives me a few days to get to know at least some of the people, especially the voices and hands of snooth who live in the big apple.   Phillips Hill Oppenlander Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006

  Drinking very well now! Great wine with bright acidity, red cherry flavors backed up by a little earth. We drank on its own, but it would be tremendous with food, perhaps even Turkey dinner!

  Hey Jimmy, incidentally have you tried any of the other Phillips wines? I'm not entirely in love with their cab, but they've got a syrah and a petite sirah that are both worthy. I like those guys.

Read moreYoshi, The Seven Deadly Zins is a blend of ...wait...you guessed it, Zinfandel ... put out by Michael and David Phillips. This wine is typical of the Zins being produced in Lodi, Big and bold, very fruit forward with flavors of plums and blackberry jam and some spicyness in the finish. It was this wine that got Ms Cocktail and I very interrested in exploring the Zins from the region. The nice thing about this wine is that because it is a blend, it has a pretty stable flavor profile, it doesn't vary much from year to year. It is also very widely available. The Zinfandel wines from other California regions tend not to be quite so lush as those from Lodi. dmcker's post give some great info on where to start on those...    (hide)

I have not seen any Rumble vintage Sparkling Shirazes, only his non-vintage, which are good but not classic. Simon, you are a privileged man to see the wines you mentiion. I assume they were the Show Reserve, which is generally outstanding. The cheaper "Original" is one of the best value fro money around. Phillip - the society is a small one - "The Metropolitan Wine & Food Society of Sydney". It has about 50 signed up members and 25-30 active members (mixed gender) depending on the occasion. About 8 functions per year, including one or two tastings, a formal President's dinner, luncheons, dinners, etc. The AGM is a picnic. We try to visit a winegrowing area every two years. There is variable knowledge about wine within the group and very good food knowledge. I can get more info to you if you wish.    (hide)
