Pioneer Vineyard High in the hills surrounding the Barossa Valley lies Pewsey Vale, Eden Valley's first vineyard. Its founder, Englishman Joseph Gilbert, arrived in South Australia after seeing an advertisement in the London Times announcing the vessel, The Buckinghamshire's imminent departure for the colony. Land was up for grabs and Joseph wasted no time grabbing it, just four months after his arrival - 15,000 acres of rugged high country in the then-wild and remote Barossa ranges, some 40 miles from Adelaide. By 1841, just two years after his arrival, Joseph, the 38 year old son of a well-heeled English landowner, had built a fine homestead and planted Pewsey Vale's first grapevines. The vines were of a table grape variety, but an idea was starting to take shape... In 1847 Joseph planted a one-acre vineyard, establishing Eden Valley's pioneer vineyard and one of Australia's first high altitude, cool climate vineyards. At the same time, several hundred feet below, Johann Gramp was planting the Read more »

  • Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling Eden Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

I am becoming a big fan of Australian dry Riesling...first thought only Western Australia was on board, but this Eden Valley selection shows that I was again caught thinking to narrowly, a common habit, I confess. Read More

  • You have to love Australia’s red wines. If for nothing else than the sheer simplicity of twisting off a baker’s dozen of screw-caps as opposed to setting out to fight with so many corks. OK that’s not a tremendous motivation to get you to try these wines but it was a sweet sight for my sore eyes, or hand as the case may be. Some of these wines w... Read More

  • Pewsey Vale Riesling Eden Valley the Contours 2003

    Snoothrank:

People dont get the brilliance of these dry rieslings because they are so rarely encountered with this sort of age on them. Here we have an example with perfect provenance, winery direct in fact. Smoky on the nose with an almost custardy edge to the core of crabapple that is framed by subtle honey and green tea notes. On entry this remains youth... Read More

  • Pewsey Vale Dry Riesling Eden Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

~ Editor's Choice ~Quite perfumed on the nose, with aromas of apple blossoms, dry tree bark, quince and limes. While painfully young, this shows great cut in the mouth with a nice edge of richness, though it remains medium to light bodied. There's a lovely rush of sour apple, lime and raw quince flavors on the palate, with gentle floral accents ... Read More

  • Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling Eden Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

The 2010 Pewsey Vale Riesling is a rich and intensely flavoured wine. Classic fruit aromas on the nose with talcum, crushed stone and limes and a hint of dried herbs. The palate shows great length and depth with lemon and limes. The wine finishes with a soft but fresh natural acidity which balances the flavour intensity and a minerality that wil... Read More

  • There's an argument to be made for Riesling, and it's made on a regular basis. It goes something like this: Riesling is great, it's flexible and it's food friendly, with wines ranging from dry to syrupy sweet, so there's something for everyone to like. This has been the argument of the day for years now. Trouble is Riesling still finds resistanc... Read More

  • Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling Eden Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

Lovely mineral water, sandy soil, and floral notes accent the Meyer lemon core of fruit. Rich and deep on entry this has absolutely wonderful freshness and fine cut. It expresses a nice mineral edge early on with subtle apple flavors topped with a fine citrus quality. this is dry and austere, structured with broad shoulders that lead into a fine... Read More
