From its first production of 141 cases of 1995 Shiraz, Penny's Hill has established a fine reputation for outstanding vineyards from which acclaimed wines have emerged. Very much a part of the recent McLaren Vale landscape, the Penny's Hill story commenced over twenty years ago. From its beginnings on bare grazing land upon which cows and sheep had long trod, the brand is now reflected in some of the very best quality vineyards in the region, fine full-bodied wines which are sold to loyal and appreciative wine lovers not only locally but in all discerning export markets, and a cellar door and restaurant complex recognised nationally for its excellence of food and service, for its iconic location and for its direct links to the farming traditions of the greater region. Welcome to Penny's Hill and its unique story.– Description from hinaualan
I must confess that these Oz Shiraz blends are a bit mystifying in hedonic terms - from a personal standpoint, at least. The Black Chook, for instance, is heavily stamped with a nose of spiced, over-ripe red fruit - even spoiled - although the palate i...

Secret Santa 2015 was a success! We eventually figured out who the senders and recipients were based on past drinking habits and assorted sleuthing. Some bottles were consumed quickly but others are in storage awaiting the right moment to enjoy them. Thanks to everyone for participating. Final pairings are listed below:JONDERRY - received bo... After graduating from medical school and before beginning indentured service as a resident physician, my wife and I decided we should make a trip out to California wine country and Yosemite. So, a week after moving to my new residency location, we pawned off the two year old on the grandparents and headed for the hills of California. We arrived i... Read More
I love N. Rhone Syrah. It's my favorite red wine in France. But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof. Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... Read More
Howdy, folks. I have access to very well preserved mid-90s Mondavi reserve cabs. I have been eyeing them for a while and wondered if anyone here has opened them recently and cared to share their thoughts on whether they are worth the $100 or so it would cost to acquire them. Thanks in advance. Since my queries of this nature are usually tagged to the end of other threads of (somehwat) related nature, I figured I'd start one of dedicated nature. Hopefully this'll be easier to search for and come back to in the future. Here's an offer from HDH in Chicago. Anything of particular interest, or of relatively good pricing? This offer seems a... What's the worst wine you have ever had? I had some Don Luciano Shiraz over the weekend (which is a $4.00 wine I picked up at Wal-Mart...just to see). I had had the Don Luciano Chardonnay and it was OK, but the Shiraz I had smelled like road kill (very heavy sulfur)--I wonder if I got a bad bottle. Has anyone else tried it? Read More
So we were invited over to some friends for supper a couple days ago, and they asked me to bring some wine. Salmon with blue berry relish was on the menu, so I was going to pick up a white wine.I walked into my local wine store right there on the first shelf I saw was Mission Hill's premium wine 2006 S.LC. Chardonnay ($29.99). Now generally spea... Read More
