Tired of boring old wines from Australia? No? Then you can probably thank Penfolds Wines. Penfolds, founded in 1844 by Mary and Dr. Penfold (Mary gets top billing since she took care of most of the early management and winemaking responsibilities), has completely revolutionized not only its own product lines throughout the years, but also many wines in Australia as a whole. The wine produced by Penfolds was originally prescribed as tonic wines for anaemic patients, with the wine made from Grenache. By 1870, with 60 acres under vine, they were producing many more wines. In the 1920s and 1930s, Penfolds was known for its fortified wine, like many other wineries in the area.

1943 marked the start of a massive expansion for Penfolds Winery, with first the acquisition of Auldana Vineyard and its winery, and then the purchase of Kalimna Vineyard in 1945. By the end of the decade, they owned vineyards in McLaren Vale, Griffith, the Hunter Valley, and Minchinbury. Around the same time, winemaker Read more »

  • Breaking up isn't always hard to do. This past month Australia's prestigious Barossa Valley and Clare Valley wine regions were split into two separate geological sub-regions with possible plans to create 12 specific sub-areas within the regional differentiation. According to winemakers in the area, the move isn't so much a stratification of sub-... • Penfolds feels at home on the Grange.  The well-respected Australian winery released their 2010 Grange Shiraz this past week, the third such Granc release in the past three years. Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said the wine is a Shiraz the estate is quite proud of. “Worth the wait,” Gago said on the Penfolds website. “After a one-decade de... Read More

  • I was only recommending the larger brands because I assumed the jug wines were volume sellers. Penfolds Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, Penfolds Rawsons Retreat Cabernet/Shiraz Blend  and straight Cabernet and Shiraz, but for the extra money Penfolds Kalimna Shiraz 2010 is better.http://www.winehouse.com.au/search.asp?s=Penfolds%20B... • Dude, you're really recommending critter wines, those beasties that first uplifted then sank the Aussie wine industry??  ;-) Jacobs Creek has decent offerings, haven't had the Deakin. Any others you'd recommend? The jug wines above (except for--but maybe including the Carlo Rossi) are well better than Yellowtail. We were talking about lower-end ... Read More

  • Penfolds is one of the great Australian producers. Used to be you could get ... bottom end and the better Penfolds wines shot up to astonishing prices, all in less than 10 years. A lot of that had to do with the Australian dollar exchange rate, but I can't believe all of it did.So while they still make good wine, it's probably triple what it s... Read More

  • After last week’s disappointing look at value priced Zinfandel you would be right to think that this week’s take on value priced Syrah, with a focus on Australian Shiraz, might produce equally horrifying results. After all if there was a poster child for big, oaky, goopy, and slightly sweet wines in the marketplace Aussie Shiraz certainly would ... Read More
