The company’s hundred or so hectares of vineyards are tended with the greatest possible care. In the northern estates of the Côtes du Rhône, the wide diversity of terroirs and the influence of micro-climates favours the production of Syrah. This is the principle variety, and the sole red grape, grown by Paul Jaboulet Aîné, while Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier are used for the white wines. This provides the wines of each appellation with a well-defined personality. Paul Jaboulet Aîné favours traditional vineyard husbandry. Yields are restricted to between 25 and 35 hectolitres per hectare from vines that are on average 40 years old, with the most illustrious being nearly 80 years old. Canopy management, crop thinning, pruning and harvesting are all carried out by hand. Ancestral methods such as the use of hand winches and stake training of vines are still used, all of which requires a skilled, experienced workforce. • Paul Jaboulet Aine Vacqueyras les Cypres 2006

I bought this bottle of wine for £10 from a wine merchant in Sussex. Vacqueyras is a southern Rhone appellation created in 1990 for wines produced around the village of that name about 10 miles east of the town of Orange on the banks of the river Ouveze,a tributary of the Rhone. Before 1990 it was one of the Cotes du Rhone Villages. Most producti... Read More

  • Paul Jaboulet Aîné Côte-Rôtie les Jumelles 1995

Brick red in the glass. Truffle remains on the nose and savory mushroom. Aromas of grilled herbs, pepper and dried bay leaf. Dried red fruit aromas also. Fading palate with flavors of dried red fruits, pretty red currant and berry under truffle and a savory salinity. It has held on well, but drink now. 91 pts.3/9/13 Read More

  • Paul Jaboulet Parallele 45 Cotes du Rhone 2007

Smoky, roasted herb and dark black fruits on the nose. Aromas of cedar, spice. Smoky and driven by red berry on the palate with some black berry flavors intermingled. Nice spicy herbal backbone. Savory, with subtle hints of black tea, dried flowers and dried red berry. Nice wine. 86 pts.3/9/13 Read More

  • Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert 2007

The nose showed cherries in fresh turned soil, with notes of undergrowth, candle wax, minerals and floral stems. On the palate it was lean, showing tight blackberry fruit, herbs and hints of stone. The finish was long, with red fruits clinging on the mid-palate. This wine closed in on itself and took six hours, open in bottle, to really show its... Read More
