Orion is the flagship wine produced by the esoteric, cult winemaker Sean Thackrey in Napa Valley, California. Many believe this is the truest expression of the grape since most of the ones in France became non-distinct hybrids due to the grafting initiative necessary to ward off the destructive mites (Syrah at one time had different classifications and clones in the Rhone, with each vineyard and appellation known for its unique strain of Syrah. In the past century, for the sake of simplicity, all Syrah became classified as one grape). The other grapes in the blend have grown naturally there since at least 1905. Thackrey also employs a combination of high tech oenology with methods learned from studying books on Medieval winemaking. The result is a rich, expressive wine with bold flavors. These small production wines are much sought after, Read more »

  • Thackrey Sean Orion Old Vine Rossi Vineyard 2005

Ok, I'm convinced! A Cally cult wine actually worth the hype. Flowery, sweet smells on the nose giving way to blueberry and white chocolate, earth, licorice and mint.
