The Leflaive family has always had a few hectares of vines in Burgundy, in addition to their farm.

Joseph Leflaive

Just after the First World War, Olivier’s grandfather, Joseph Leflaive was faced with the failure of his steel factory in Saint-Etienne. His investments in Burgundy were all he had left and he decided to enlarge his wine estate. It became a family-run operation covering some 35 hectares. His son, Joseph Régis, was in insurance and along with his brother Vincent, decided to take over the reins in 1953. The estate soon began producing top-flight wines, mainly due to the arrival of air conditioning in Puligny in the 1970s. This was a major step for winemakers in this village which sits two meters above the water table and as such, had no underground cellars.

  •    I just posted almost all of my notes on Bordeaux 2012 on my ... oysters!), I enjoyed a fine Olivier Leflaive 2002 Chassagne Montrachet, which was perfect.  The Domaine de Chevalier 2002 red was fresh and meaty, coming from a double magnum. Super impressive looking was the Domaine de Chevalier 1992 red, from a 15 liter bottle. But it was a b... Read More

  • Olivier Leflaive Pinot Noir Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru 2009

Clear and transparent ruby-red colour, very consistent.Intense and complex aromas, clearly perceiving red fruits such as cherrys under spirit.Very acid but also warm and rich of tannins, only at first might seem fulling the mouth, persistent, still seems not totally equilibrated. Read More

  • Olivier Leflaive Freres O Lef 05 Bour Bl les Setille 2005

Well it's no surprise that I got to this bottle a little late. That being said there were signs of life, though they were fleeting. At first sniff/drink I was overwhelmed by minerals. By about mid glass I got a brief preview of what this wine once was. Fruity aromas, pear, and melon, followed by lasting minerals, with crisp acidity. The... Read More

  • Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Bl Setilles 2008

This is very floral on the nose, with tropical tones over lean lemon custard and tangelo fruit. Bright and well focused with good depth of flavor on a light frame. This is streamlined and sleek with gentle suggestions of pollen, fennel and maybe even a touch of rhubarb accenting the core of citrus fruit. Very fresh and vibrant in the mouth in a ... Read More

  • Leflaive les Setilles Bourgogne Blanc 2009

Tight on the nose with tree bark and tar notes over faint lime and peach, with a gentle violet pastille top note. This is fairly rich for this bottling with acid that seems a touch soft, though its probably only in relation to the richness. Lots of apple and peach fruit here along with mineral and gentle oak notes. The finish was a bit steely an... Read More

Warm golden apple, pear, carmel, with a citrusy finish and hint of oak. Some mushroomy earthiness balances it out. Has some good weight to it. Read More

  • Leflaive les Setilles Bourgogne Blanc 2009

Very oaky on the nose. Apricots and minerals on the tongue with a sour bitter finish. Not a huge fan of this one, but I tend to dislike the more oaky Chardonnays. Read More
