Old North State Winery started as a cooperative in 2002 and has since evolved into a winery owned by two families with one vision. Our vineyards were established on farms that have been in our families for generations. We hope you enjoy the culmination of our dreams, our devotion to our farmland, and our passion for our wines produced at Old North State Winery. Most of our wines start out as luscious wine grapes grown on Yadkin Valley North Carolina family farms. We are the Old North State Winery, Inc. located in Mount Airy, in the headwaters of the Yadkin Valley AVA. Wine, beer and fine foods are our passion and our legacy. According to the 1890 Census North Carolina produced more wine than any other state. They held this distinction until Prohibition. At the turn of the twentieth century, North Carolina wines won international awards at the World's Fair in Paris. We are back. Our passion is the wine and beer that we produce for your enjoyment. Our family farms have roots that run deep into the soil Read more »

  • I was wondering what sort of new topic I could start that would pair nicely with my previous posting 'Weekday Wines'; well here it is - Weekend Wines.  Sometimes I just have to stop and take a minute to pat myself on the back for my quick wit but alas, this isn't one of those times.  Anyway, why not talk about wines we enjoy on weekends?  These ... • Hello Angela.  I'm also originally from Michigan but have been in North Carolina for quite a few years now. I still have most of my family (parents, brother, sisters and their families) in the mitten state.  We visit often and try to get some winery tours in when we can.  In the southwest we've been to St. Julian (nice but fairly big and commerc... • Hello, new friends. I am looking very forward to getting on board (literally and figuratively). I am in the SW Michigan region, which is actually boasting some decent wine these days. Read More

  • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost... • California, the land of sunshine, free spirits, and big wines. Right? Yes, of course, all that is true but today we are seeing that free spirited attitude change the paradigm for wine production. Some might say that we are witnessing a return to a different style of wine. Fresher, lower in alcohol and having more in common with wines produced se... Read More

  • Just finished tasting Ballabourneen The Stuart 2013 Chardonnay (Australian Wine Selectors Hunter Valley Series January 2014 dozen), bottled under screwcap. Supposed to have a "round and subtle biscuity finish" Well the bottle I tasted was way to subtle for me I'm afraid! I think it is due to last week's tasting of the Tapanappa  2008 Tiers Picca... • Hi everyone.  My wife Sandra and I have been into wine for the past few years and that's led to a few trips to Napa Valley and related areas in 2012 and 2013.  We enjoy all wines but reds are our favorites.  We hosted our first wine tasting party last night and it was a fun event - sixteen wine lovers trying different wines in a blind tasting.  ... • Hoping that some of you might be able to help me out. I'm going down to AZ for vacation next week. I'm really only broadly planning which areas to go to now, and I really want to nail down some plans so I can have some idea of what we're doing! I know that there is some wine tourism in Arizona. Do you guys know anything about the wines or wineri... Read More

  • California "Old Vine" wines, Zinfandel, especially, have been getting a lot of attention in the last few years.  I, certainly, have been paying more attention to them, lately, mostly as a result of the postings of Outthere on some of the historic vineyards in his neck of the woods.  He interested me enough to join the Historic Vineyard Society, ... • I know of a number of people in the craft beer world who are purposely introducing brettanomyces into the brewing equation to see how interesting things can get. 'Wild yeast' beers are barely (not) controllable but they are rapidly becoming cult items. Case in point, this quote about a Sierra Nevada brew, taken from Good Morning America: Sierra ... Read More
