1978 and the New Zealand fine wine industry was almost non existent. We (Tim and I) pioneers-bigwere fresh from the “back to the land” movement of the late sixties. We wanted to make beautiful wine. We figured Tim’s masters in Animal Behaviour along with my unimpressive journalism career would be beneficial. Wrong. However we did have youth (temporary), self belief (unwarranted) and friends. At one stage we had four mortgages and three jobs each. Because there was so little known about basic viticulture in New Zealand we planted many varieties to see which ones were best suited to our soils. Merlot came and went as did Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and the dreaded Muller Thurgau. We were a bit hasty in rejecting Gewürztraminer and may look at that again. But we did it. We, and a whole heap of people – neighbours, family, friends and some fantastic staff. Each left a mark and many have gone onto work in bigger wineries or plant their own vineyard. • Just finished tasting Ballabourneen The Stuart 2013 Chardonnay (Australian Wine Selectors Hunter Valley Series January 2014 dozen), bottled under screwcap. Supposed to have a "round and subtle biscuity finish" Well the bottle I tasted was way to subtle for me I'm afraid! I think it is due to last week's tasting of the Tapanappa  2008 Tiers Picca... • Pinot noir has become the great alternative. When you don’t want to give another big red wine as a gift it opens up a world of possibilities. Immediately appreciated by name alone, Pinot seems to have developed a certain cachet as the thinking man’s red wine, though there is little evidence to support that. Perhaps it comes from the history that... Read More

  • Neudorf Sauvignon Blanc Nelson 2011

    Snoothrank:

Kiwi at first and then almost apricot, with pear and white orchard fruits covered with lime leaf and grapefruit pith notes. Super bright and very fine on entry with very clear grapefruit and passion fruit flavors. Fine acid adds length with a little old wood here adding roundness. Theres a nice return on the finale of pithy though sweet fruit. ... Read More

  • Neudorf Pinot Noir Nelson Tom's Block 2009

    Snoothrank:

Smells like a handful of freshly turned soil. Little pine nuts, floral, raspberry, a bit spicy, perfumed with fresh fruit and forest floor character, bright, fine cut, tense, nice sage accents up front, lingonberry, raspberry, fine tannins, succulent, slightly drying, little stern, not a fruity style but fruity aromatics, little flower stem roma... • Neudorf "Moutere" Pinot Noir Nelson 2010

    Snoothrank:

Tight. Fine, perfumed, a bit of obvious oak, very focused nose, fine dried herbs, almost a touch of lavender, tender one try, silky, fairly rich background note of blackberry, black raspberry, bit of mint, supple tannins, bright, firm classy finish, long fresh black raspberry fruit finish, very Burgundian bit of licorice on finish.
