Neil Ellis Wines differs from most South African wineries in that instead of owning vineyards we have focused on producing the best wine possible and sourcing the grapes from top quality growers. Recognizing that different grape varieties thrive under different soil and climate conditions which are not likely to be found on a single estate, from our company's start our philosophy has been to locate those areas that produce a distinctive grape quality and work closely with quality-minded growers in those areas. Today our grapes come from three main vineyard sites: Oude Nektar Farm in Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch; Contreberg Farm in Groenekloof, Darling; the Whitehall farm in Elgin. – Description from mriskic

  • Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc Groenekloof Premium Range Neil Ellis-Sudafrika-Stellenbosch-Stellenbosch 2010

    Snoothrank:

This is green fruited and lightly sweet smelling with a lovely, sweetly vegetal, cut grass undercurrent on the nose. A touch of CO2 helps add brightness on the palate and a little prickle on the tongue. This opens rather broadly on the palate with nice tension, but the fruit is a touch matte. Citrus fruits and cut grass notes on the long, bright... Read More

  • Neil Ellis Chardonnay Elgin 2010

    Snoothrank:

To me, this wine is very caveman-like, clubbing me on the head with flavors. Very agressive fruit and oak, no integration, everything up front. I prefer a more subdued style with fruit, acidity and other elements playing off each other instead of overpowering each other. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Lightly spiced, pear and apple flavors and aromas. There's some nice creaminess but it's muted until the finish. Nice warming palate, baked apples and cinnamon. Read More

  • I've just offered to help some friends select wines for their upcoming wedding, and thought i'd drop in to see if you all had any fresh suggestions.  The price range/bottle is $10-$20, and it will be for at least two types of red wine. Right off the bat, I'm pretty sure I can easily find a good Malbec blend from Argentina that fits the criteria.... • This CA girl tasted a pretty decent NZ sauv blanc at a gallery opening in SF last nite.  It was not an expensive wine... was a Koura Bay Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2009.  Looked it up... was abt. $12, nothing exceptional.  But it piqued my curiosity...Any recommendations for a wonderful NZ Sauv Blanc?  This one had lots of citrus, pineapple,...
