Neil Ellis Wines differs from most South African wineries in that instead of owning vineyards we have focused on producing the best wine possible and sourcing the grapes from top quality growers. Recognizing that different grape varieties thrive under different soil and climate conditions which are not likely to be found on a single estate, from our company's start our philosophy has been to locate those areas that produce a distinctive grape quality and work closely with quality-minded growers in those areas. Today our grapes come from three main vineyard sites: Oude Nektar Farm in Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch; Contreberg Farm in Groenekloof, Darling; the Whitehall farm in Elgin. – Description from mriskic

  • Fox, the Schram Mirabelle is up there with the worst wines I've tasted! Would not buy another but would sip again if poured just to confirm if it was a bad bottle or not.It is a good time to plan these things out, and sounds like you had a great experience. People coming up to you years later is definitely a feather in your cap, hoping for a sim... Read More

  • Had a fun tasting matchup, another in the series of helping a young couple pick out their wedding wines. Schramsberg was my first thought, but I think they may have balked at the price (our local has a great deal @ $27), so we went ahead and set up a tasting along with a Roederer Estate, which sells closer to the $20 level.Started out with the R... • Thought I'd start a topic to see what "different" wines people are drinking. I've been on a hunt to find wines made from lesser known grapes or from unusual areas. Here's one of each. This is a rose made from Cinsault, not too unusual right? Well this is from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Either they don't make very good wine in Lebanon or this bo... Read More

  • Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc Sincerely 2010

    Snoothrank:

Decent South African Sauv Blanc. Loads of white grapefuit, lemon peel, citrus and some minerality. Somewhat one dimensional but a nice change of pace from the more typical SB and a good QPR. Read More

  • Back at ya, Kim.Thank you for the excellent list.  The good news is that I live in a large metropolitan area.  So, it is possible that I might be able to find some of the labels that you have suggested. As it turns out, you caught me in a mistatement.  (I'm old.  I forget.)  I have had another South African wine, and it was a Pinotage from Neil ... • Neil Ellis Pinotage Stellenbosch 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite purple color. Not the prettiest nose--earthy, "leafy." Interesting on the palate. It's not terribly fruity--maybe a tad of cherry flavor--but there is a very "sweet" sensation around the edges of the tongue. No tannin to speak of at all. Smooth, very brief finish--a touch of bitterness, but that is gone in a millisecond. An easy wine... Read More
