My wife and I were in Napa Valley around roughly the same time but it looks like we hit completely different wineries. It was a beautiful time of year to be out there but I will say I was a bit surprised to see 100 degree temps at the end of September. The wineries that my wife and I hit were: Cliff Lede Pride Mountain Artesa Pine Ridge Heitz Masonry Larkmead Joseph Phelps Sequoia Grove Our favorite experiences were the tour and pairing at Cliff Lede, the summit tasting at Pride Mountain, and the tasting at Larkmead. Cliff Lede was a small group of 4 couples lead by a very knowledgeable guide (Tom). We toured the winery and took a brief stroll through the vineyards before our tasting. It was a lot of fun but it was a little pricey. The summit tasting at Pride Mountain was amazing. It was a private tasting with one of the wineries senior staff members. We had Jason the head chef and trained sommelier. The tasting started with a tour of the caves, and we ended with tasting out of the barrel. It was great. Larkmead is on our list first of all because their wines were fantastic. Secondly, the tasting experience was a ton of fun as well. We got a brief tour from Susan through the winery and got to see cabernet grapes being sorted and de-stemmed. The tasting itself was very relaxed and intimate. This is a definite must do for the next time.    (hide)

Read moreJust wanted to give you all a bit of a rundown of what we ended up doing in Sonoma and beyond. Our trip didn't occur exactly as we thought it might, but we were prepared for that, and had a perfect-ish little vaca. We started out by spending a bit of time in San Fran, where we stayed at the Fairmont. We had dinner at the Nob Hill Cafe, discovered the Tongo Room (for a future visit!) and visited SFMOMA. Saturday we picked up our rental car and attempted to find the Marin French Cheese Co, but Google provided us miserable directions so that too will be for a future visit. The rest of that day just got us to the hotel and a bit of relaxation around the pool. Sunday was our Napa day. Before heading to Napa we started with a walk along Overlook Trail in Sonoma and a bit of time at the pool. When we reached Napa we we started with a visit to Artesa where we enjoyed their modern-ish architecture, design, and art pieces and then headed to The Hess Collection where we tasted their Pinot Gris and viewed the art collection on display. Next we headed for our "big" tour of Beringer, Taste of Beringer, where we learned a bit about Beringer, their process and sampled four of their "Leaning Oak" wines including their 07 Port. It was a decent tour and nice to see one of the big boys, as it were. We originally planned to visit Robert Mondavi as well, but some sunshine by the pool trumped that vineyard this time. Monday was our Sonoma day and we had originally planned to visit Loxton, Deerfield Ranch, Ledson, and Arrowood by bike. After getting a better idea of the roads leading to these we changed it up a bit and visited Ravenswood, Gundlach Bunschu, and Sebastiani, all quite close to the town of Sonoma, by bicycle and visited Loxton by car in the afternoon. At Loxton we very much enjoyed the wines, in general they had a nice light-to-medium body which made for very easy drinking. My wife especially appreciated Chris' style. Loxton was definitely the smallest vineyard we saw and it was nice to visit both a micro-winery and big kahuna such as Beringer. Tuesday was our Healdsburg day where we had intended to visit Michel-Schlumberger, Ridge, and Kendall Jackson. Again we came up "short" and only made it to Michel-Schlumberger. Though of the group we were very happy this was the one we made it to. We had an excellent tour, which ended up being private as the other guests didn't show. Might have been due to the 100 degree heat that day! Interesting to see their sustainable practices and philosophy and very good wines too. That was the extent of this first trip to Sonoma. I've heard some quote a six-bottle minimum requirement for futures purchases, but otherwise have never been hit with any kind of minimum order demand. I tend to want to buy more than a bottle or two when I order because a) I like drinking good wine regularly and go through several bottles a week on average, year in and year out ;-), and b) the shipping costs become a higher proportion of the bottle cost when making a small order. However I have placed two or three bottle orders on several occasions. BPE is more a specialist in older, higher-value, difficult-to-find wines, but both of them are carrying Ridge Lytton Springs right now for prices just above $30 per bottle. You should ask them about shipping particulars... I'm sure there are many other merchants you might use on the US East Coast or elsewhere. Frog's Leap winery - Awesome not overoaked chardonnay, "Rutherford" blend is one of my favorites, and the people there are great. They also hve a frogenbeerenauslese that's quite fun, whimsical play on german TBA. Groth Family - great great cabs Miner Family - good assortment, I'm a fan of their rosado Reynolds Family James Cole - 750 case annual yield microscopic winery but I really like their wines, and the people there like to listen to rock music in the tasting room. The rolling stones love their wine, and so do I. Not sure if they still pour it but James' Brother makes a pinot noir icewine from okanagan. Delicious. Pina - they will give u 2 cabs for the taste, I personally like their Howell Mountin cab. Vincent Arroyo - Great reds, if you're into petite sirah, they make a good one Grgich Hills - if you're there on a weekday try to call in advance to see if Mike Grgich is going to be there and sign your bottle! (he made the legendary 1973 Chat Montelena Chard, but I think bo barrett and him stil hvent spoken in 30 years though haha) Stag's Leap Wine Cellars - just overall really well made wines, "Fay" and "Artemis" are staples in my cellar Casa Nuestra - another small winery, they have 2 giant namibian goats outside their tasting room. good fun Duckhorn - just because Dutch Henry - great reds Chateau Montelena - just because Quintessa - just because Mumm - if you like bubbly Second the motion on the other recomms! FN, Phelps, Lark, etc Also, when the wineries are closed at 5pm, I usually head over to the bounty hunter in downtown napa. One of the few places that are open till late, serve some good flights of wine, and they have amazing spicerubbed beercan chicken which I order every single time. for SCM - Ridge is awesome but I went there on a field trip so we got to see the cellars and go barrell tasting of the montebello, I'm sure the tasting room is fun as well! Cooper Garrod was great, we got to prune some vines when we visited haha. Mount Eden has great wines, And if you could somehow miraculously get an appointment, (as it is closed to all visitors) Katheryn Kennedy wines are really good. Enjoy! Hope this helps    (hide)
