The Napa Valley stretches 35 miles from Carneros to Calistoga and within that distance there are a great number of Mesoclimates and Microclimates. According to the UC Davis Heat Summation Index, Napa Valley has all four climate regions, allowing a diverse set of grapes to be grown. At Napa Cellars we aim to take advantage of the diverse vineyard climates for blending purposes. Year in and year out this allows us to make consistent quality wine because we can pick and choose the best grapes for our blend. Additionally, by blending grapes from different climates, we can balance fruit flavors with tannin structure and acidity. – Description from dvoristanac

  • Just when we thought this much fun couldn’t possibly continue we had day three.Started off with another fine breakfast at our B&B to lay in a good base and then off to our first appointment at Emeritus. Our enthusiastic host Laurel started us off with a taste of their Hallberg Ranch pinot and a tour of the vineyard and winery. This was followed ... Read More

  • We're doing a long weekend in Russian River and Napa this weekend. Flew into San Francisco yesterday with no problems. Friend picked us up at the airport, definitely beats the heck out of fighting the huge crowd at the rental car counters. Why don't they have a contiguous highway from the airport to hwy 101.So what's the first thing to do in win... Read More

  • About a year ago I ranted a bit about the wax capsules that some makers put over the corked end of the bottle.  The cooler heads of the Forum calmed me down, and I am now co-existing with these. In the past few years I have noticed that more and more makers (U.S.) are not applying a capsule at all.  I have to say, I like this idea, a lot.  Some s... • Napa Valley grape growers and winemakers wore out their worry beads in 2011. Rain came early, often and didn’t want to go away. It was a cool year as well, forcing winemakers to spend even more time walking the vineyards than usual. Napa Valley is accustomed to dry, warm, sunny growing seasons. It’s Cabernet Sauvignon wines are widely known for ... Read More

  • Skeptical I recently visited the Napa Valley for the first time in about three years. Like many wine geeks, I’m jaded when it comes to Napa Valley wines, almost programed to dismiss them based on their success. You see, to be a true wine geek has somehow morphed into cultivating an exclusive appreciation of obscure wines. Orange wines? Bring the... Read More

  • A couple of news items I was pondering today.First, Robert Parker came out with his ratings for the 2009 Bordeaux vintage. Ever the masochist, I decided to go look at some prices in the marketplace after the ratings were released. • So some years back, I drank almost exclusively California wines, and pretty much Cab, Zin, Pinot, and, for whites, a bit of Sauv Blanc.  In my wine knowledge, I was more a hedgehog than I was my namesake animal the fox:  A fox knows many things, but a hedgehog knows one big thing.  In my case, I knew a few wines very well (at least for my overal... • Outside of the pricey boutique wineries, who do you think consistently produces good wine year-after-year and represents good value? I'm thinking of the "larger" more established wine makers, who try and bring their A-game across the spectrum of their varietals. To me the sign of a good wine maker and overall brand is someone who you can trust ev...
