MX Wines is based in Napa Valley, California, and hand-crafts miniscule quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The debut 2004 MX Cabernet Sauvignon "Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard," and 2004 MX Amnesia Zinfandel "H and L Vineyard," sold out immediately on release. Just released - from a dry-farmed (non-irrigated) vineyard planted in 1980, making the vines 29 years old. The vineyard is less than one acre, so production is scarce. The owners take such meticulous care of these vines that we call it the Zin Garden.

  • However, OT, the comments about overboarding on the brand's price rampup were both correct, and relatively mild.If I may, I think it's safe to say that pretty much all of us here are more interested in spending on more wines that are as (or more) interesting and tasty than To Kalon fruited (as well as other cult-ish wines) which are good but not... • Comparing Randy Dunn 's Howell Mountain fruit to To Kalon's Oakville valley fruit is a bit of a stretch. Then there's the Dunn winemaking stye...I've had plenty of To Kalon wines on the young side and I can say one thing, they are never lacking. Sure they were young but they showed the parts that will make them shine brighter in years to come. F... Read More

  • Can recall opening a young Dunn and sharing my experience on here, it must've been a 2008 had in 2010/11. Definitely wasn't corked, but the VA was like nothing I've had before, super herbacious and no fruit. If that truly was a correct bottle, then it stands out as the worst infanticide I've ever committed.Obviously, differing styles will go a l... Read More

  • How did this old thread come back to life?To be honest, when I was a kid, ToKalon was part of the mix of the Mondavi reserve.  It made great wine.  And I've had it since, but the branding is really out of control. OT, I agree with you in many, many things wne-related, and I think you can get a pretty good idea of where a wine is going even when ... • We I am reading wine reviews about wines that require cellering I am not sure which dateyou consider when the writer says this wine could use 2-5 years in the cellar. Is it from the date of the vintage or is it from the date of the review? I always thought it was the date of the vintage but others have said it is the date of the review. So I am ... Read More

  • Last week I opened 2 bottles of sparkling wine I bought a while ago directly from the wine maker in Queretaro (La Redonda). I tasted the wine (brut) before and really liked it. Now both bottles I opened had a very strange "fishy" smell and taste to it. It was that bad that the wine wasn´t drinkable.I remember that it was a hot day when I purchas... Read More

  • Last night at the Oriel office we had a side-by-side comparison of our 365 prosecco to a particular champagne with a bright yellow label (I'm sure you know the one). Here are our thoughts:In terms of food, we had fresh summer strawberries and Murray's hooked us up with a triple creme and a 'hock ybrig' (cow's milk cheese from Swiss mountains). E... Read More

  • On the weekend I made a little trip to visit the wineries in the state of Quéretaro, México. I would recommend to stay in Tequisquiapan, a beautiful village about 2 hours north of México City. The village has a very picturesque spanish style plaza with many good restaurants that serve the local wines. There are also some very nice wine and chees... Read More
