The New York Review of Books is not the first place most of us turn (or even the third or tenth) for wine talk, so, as a subscriber, I thought I'd bring attention to this terrific review of Neurogastronomy, a new book by Gordon Shepherd--who is not a wine reviewer with a blog to promote but a neuroscientist. Although the review title is a bit m... Read More

You’ve probably tried a few New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs and maybe even ... the soft fruit. 91pts2009 Muddy Water ChardonnayWith a big nose of smoke, almonds, spicy floral tones and dried fruit, this is a bit of an attention grabber. Muddy Water Chardonnay Waipara 2009
Snoothrank:
With a big nose of smoke, almonds, spicy floral tones and dried fruit, this is a bit of an attention grabber. Very bright and rather vibrant and rich on the palate with nice depth; this is quite Burgundian with a nice balance of nutty oak and fruit on the finish. The fruit transitions from orchard fruits to citrus on the palate with the finish s... Read More

September 2011
I taste a lot of wine, both for work and pleasure. I would like to get better at it, but I don't know how. While I am able to pick out varietals, and often, even regions, pretty accurately, I want more than that. I want to be able to pick out all of the wine's nuances, both on the nose and on the palate. Often when I am tasting I find that o... Read More

Muddy Water Hares Breath Pinot Noir Waipara 2008
Snoothrank:
A nice flush of herbs greet the nose here. This is quite open and giving already, with herbal and medicinal notes adding complexity to the strawberry fruit. Bright and clear in the mouth with a lovely mineral core that lends good tension to the mouthfeel. This is well-balanced and nicely proportioned if a bit simple. 88pts Read More

December 2010
Muddy Water Riesling Waipara James Hardwick 2008
Snoothrank:
Sweet and simple on the nose, with notes of peach and lime accented by light mineral water tones. Moderately sweet in the mouth with lots of peach and apricot flavors and a hint of tangerine. The acid is up to the job of holding this together and actually offers nice tension in the mouth and on the moderately long finish. 89pts Read More

Well the 2005 Barolos are tasted, and I cant help but think back to what I said last year. 2005 is a successful vintage that reflects terroir and winemaking more than weather and will need more time to be as approachable as 2004.This years tasting was a mixed crop and a challenge. Many of the wines suffered from one defect or another, be those ... Read More
