Mount Eden Vineyards

The genesis of Mount Eden Vineyards was the arrival of Burgundian winemaker Paul Masson to San Jose, California, in 1878. Masson soon established a vineyard and winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Mount Eden, where he became a well know bon vivant. Martin Ray, who grew up in the foothills below Mount Eden, became acquainted with the charismatic Frenchman and, shortly after Prohibition's repeal, purchased Paul Masson's Champagne Company. Notoriety came quickly. At a time when most California wines were blended from various, often inferior, grape varieties, noble grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were virtually unknown. The mercurial Ray began producing 100% varietal table wines, boasting that California could vinify world class wines to rival those of France. In the 1930s, it seemed a ridiculous, foolhardy claim. Wanting to establish his own brand, Ray sold the Paul Masson property in 1943 and, that following year purchased a higher peak to the north, Mount Eden. In 1945 he planted his Read more »

  • RBA, that shellfish platter looks amazing.  You would have had to roll me ... may have learned some things.Mount Eden Vineyards is, in fact, a historic wine estate located in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA.  From this list, it appears to me that there is no peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains called "Mount Eden."  So, it is unclear to me why the vi... • The oil spill is, I'm guessing, about 20 miles north of downtown Santa Barbara and about 20-25 miles south and west of what most people refer to as Santa Barbara wine country--Lompoc/Santa Ynez.  There are some tasting rooms in the city of Santa Barbara, and, in fact most of them are within walking distance of each other.  I would guess that the... • I was wondering what sort of new topic I could start that would pair nicely with my previous posting 'Weekday Wines'; well here it is - Weekend Wines.  Sometimes I just have to stop and take a minute to pat myself on the back for my quick wit but alas, this isn't one of those times.  Anyway, why not talk about wines we enjoy on weekends?  These ... • Just finished tasting Ballabourneen The Stuart 2013 Chardonnay (Australian Wine Selectors Hunter Valley Series January 2014 dozen), bottled under screwcap. Supposed to have a "round and subtle biscuity finish" Well the bottle I tasted was way to subtle for me I'm afraid! I think it is due to last week's tasting of the Tapanappa  2008 Tiers Picca... • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • Not only is Cabernet Sauvignon the most popular red wine, it’s also one that is best suited to gift giving. It’s a wine that everyone knows and understands. Big, rich and bold, it’s the archetype of red wines that is perfect for the cooler months that lie ahead. While Cabernet does get a bit of a bad rap as being ubiquitous, that doesn’t mean th... It’s the great equalizer, and while many people doth protest too much about the results, and often their results when undergoing such an exercise, the results tend to be irrefutable.Yes it’s easy to argue that less expensive wines may win because they are more approachable, ready on release while the big boys always need time but ... • Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

    Snoothrank:

Just gorgeous on the nose, sharp and savory with coffee and green herb accents to the core of meaty dark berry fruit. The oak impact is modest here adding an attractive burnt sugar and spice note but not becoming intrusive. Absolutely fresh, precise and transparent on the palate with a tense mouthfeel supporting simple if pure and vibrant fruit ... Read More
