Moon Mountain Vineyard is located high on the Sonoma Valley side of Mount Veeder, at nearly the 2,000-foot elevation. The steep, southern-facing slopes consist of soils called the Sonoma Volcanics, which are derived from rock, volcanic ash and lava. These soils, combined with the rigors of growing on the mountainside, push the vines to work harder, resulting in small, intensely flavored fruit. To balance these rugged conditions, we organically farm each row to gently enhance the complexity of the vineyard by creating a rich, healthy growing environment and produce grapes with pure flavors and a pronounced sense of place. – Description from iskicm

Moon Mountain on Snooth

  • Fox asked me the other day if I was going to start a thread on this years growing season. I've been real busy with other things and haven't had much time to focus on the specifics of the 2013 season. But, things are getting off to an early start due to unusually warm Spring weather and a mild Winter where the Sierra snowpack is only 17% of norma... Read More

  • Moon Mountain Estate Grown Petit Verdot-Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

    Snoothrank:

Aromas of sweet tarts, rhubarb, and black cherry, followed by molasses, cedar, and spice....Well balanced with good structure and soft tannins...This wine made an impression....The finish carries on...and on...It would pair well with something off the grill. Read More

  • Well most everyone has received their wines and have had them resting for a while. Unfortunately, we had a few shipping issues along the way, but all in all I think we did pretty good. Foxall is the only one not to have received anything yet, while Shi's SS wasn't heard from, but luckily an elf stepped in and sent her some wine. Finally, it look... Read More

  • Moon Mountain Estate Grown Petit Verdot-Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

    Snoothrank:

Most descriptions of Petit Verdot invariably say something to the effect that this cepage is rarely used as a varietal. Perhaps it is time that PV, like its fellow step-child grape Malbec, finds its own niche. No, it will never make a "classic" wine, but is obviously capable, in the right terroir and right hands, of delivering a reasonably price... Read More

  • I posted this question because someone on another thread referred to Merlots as "tannic" and I don't think of them that way.  But I also realize I am less sensitive to tannins than to, for example, acidity.  I have to stop and think about whether tannins are high or medium, although I can kind of quantify them if I stop and think.I think of tann... • Moon Mountain Vineyard Syrah Estate Grown 2006

    Snoothrank:

It took a lot of swishing and swilling to coax the flavor out of this wine, but was well worth the effort. The taste is more to the meaty side, but does have some latent fruitiness of the black & blue berry variety with some tea and a good dose of pepper. There was at times an earthy aftertast that made me think of patchouli. Tannins were rather... Read More

  • Moon Mountain Vineyard Syrah Estate Grown 2003

    Snoothrank:

On the nose, dark berry fruitiness and smokey meatiness. On the palate, a very luscious core of juicy blackberry and blueberry with smoke, meatiness, leather, cassis, and cedar with hints of vanilla and butter. Medium to full bodied with a long, lingering smokey aromatic finish. Acid still robust, tannins are smooth, but good balance. Read More

  • Moon Mountain Vineyard Syrah Estate Grown 2004

    Snoothrank:

Fairly good basic dark fruit with subtle smokiness, short finish. This was an ok wine but not nearly as good as was the 2003. Read More

  • Moon Mountain Vineyard Estate Grown Merlot 2004

    Snoothrank:

Very nice bouquet of fresh fruits. On the palate, very good fruitiness: mostly dark berries; well integrated oak providing notes of coconut and subtle smokiness. Smooth tannins, moderate finish. I really hope the new owner of this vineyard continues making the same wonderful wines as did Blue Moon. Read More
