The original concept for the Monument Vineyard originated in the early 1990s with a group of five Charles Sturt University Viticulture and Wine Science students. These were mature-age students, successful in their own professions who wanted to become seriously involved in wine growing. Economy of scale seemed to be the way to collectively achieve the individual goals of each of the group members, and so the Cana Viticulture Partnership was formed in which the investing partners have direct managerial control of the project. First thoughts were directed to cooler regions and the high altitude region near Orange in NSW. In recent years this district has developed a reputation for wines with intense flavours and complexity. In the 1950s the CSIRO established a pilot vineyard in the region immediately west of Orange in a slightly lower and warmer environment. This micro-climate offered the prospect of reliable and complete ripening of red grape varieties every year. The CSIRO wines showed great promise, but Read more »

  • Many of us think of Chianti as an expensive, everyday wine but of course the truth of the matter is much more complex than that, and it just got even more complex. Adding complexity where it is not necessary seems to be something the Italians excel at, and with the introduction of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione they may have just done just that... Read More

  • Stonestreet Monument Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

    Snoothrank:

Earthy and herbal with a suggestion of dry chili and lovely soil tones all layered over fresh berry fruit that is nicely framed with a touch of wood spice. This smells great. Surprisingly light bodied in the mouth with soft, ripe tannins and fine acids. This seems a touch dilute and while Im loving its drinkability it does seem to be lacking a b... Read More

  • Howdy, folks.  I have access to very well preserved mid-90s Mondavi reserve cabs. I have been eyeing them for a while and wondered if anyone here has opened them recently and cared to share their thoughts on whether they are worth the $100 or so it would cost to acquire them. Thanks in advance. • Stonestreet Cabernet Sauvignon Monument Ridge 2008

    Snoothrank:

Mineral and graphite on the nose, as well as ink and slight licorice. Richly structured with flavors of creme de cassis, juicy blackberry, dark cherry and sweet tannin. Pauillac-like in style. Nice!10/8/11 Read More

  • Couloir Wines Pinot Noir Monument Vineyard 2010

    Snoothrank:

Unfined and unfiltered, the Monument Tree isnt a shy Pinot! Deep, complex, full in style but still managing to maintain a sense of elegance. The wine jumps out of the glass with a rich mix of cherries, dried cranberry and ripe plum. It isnt all just fruit, there is still acidity to give backbone and an extensive finish. Spice is still a fairly m... Read More
