Monte Antico means ancient mountain in Italian. In the world of fine wines, a unique combination of quality, reliability and value since 1977, this label belongs to Neil & Maria Empson, who launched the Super Tuscan five years after founding the Neil Empson Selections. It was their special affinity to the heartland of Italy that led them to make their very own mark on Tuscan soil: with the Maestro of Italian winemakers, Franco Bernabei. They have styled the Tuscan grape per eccellenza and expressed its ultimate potential, complimenting it with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The best selections are cherry picked according to harvest conditions in the individual terroirs and microclimates. The blend for Monte Antico is 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. The best selections are blended and aged 1 year in oak (80% in Slovenian barrels, 20% in barrique) with at least 6 months bottle age. This wine is consistently one of Italy’s better values.

  • Monte Antico Supertuscan Blend Toscana IGT 2006

    Snoothrank:

Bright cherries on the nose with a bit of herbs. Plum and violets flavors, with good tannins and an herbaciousness towards the end, although the short finish falls short of pushing this into the 90s. Read More

  • Monte Antico Supertuscan Blend Toscana IGT 2006

    Snoothrank:

Not a bad everyday wine! My wine merchant turned me on to it and I served it with spaghetti bolognese (my spicy version) that evening. Little bit in the sauce, little bit in my glass.Fruity nose (plums) with a hint of maple syrup, sweet initially with chocolate and raisins on the palate, and has a satisfying finish with a little bitterness at th... • Monte Antico Supertuscan Blend Toscana IGT 2006

    Snoothrank:

Very easy drinking, with a terrific nose. Nice fruit, but not jammy at all, with tannins to give it a pleasant bite. Kind of earthy with a bit of an herbal thing going on. I would probably pair this with a slightly sweet red sauce and pasta. Or maybe grilled lamb. Terrific QPR at $10 or so. Read More

  • Monte Antico Supertuscan Blend Toscana IGT 2006

    Snoothrank:

Had this on its own (without food) and found it a bit too dry for easy drinking. I have a second bottle, so will try it again to see if my opinion changes, since the reviews are overall positive. The backing taste is pretty decent, but I just couldn't get behind the wine overall. Read More

  • Monte Antico Supertuscan Blend Toscana IGT 2006

    Snoothrank:

I buy this as an everyday wine, The aroma is initially pleasing but a little weak as indicated while tasting. Berries with velvet and acidity and the taste does not linger long. That is why I typically drink this with red sauce pasta. Combined with food really brings out the flavor. That is why I look at it for an everyday wine rather than ... Read More
