Monte Antico means ancient mountain in Italian. In the world of fine wines, a unique combination of quality, reliability and value since 1977, this label belongs to Neil & Maria Empson, who launched the Super Tuscan five years after founding the Neil Empson Selections. It was their special affinity to the heartland of Italy that led them to make their very own mark on Tuscan soil: with the Maestro of Italian winemakers, Franco Bernabei. They have styled the Tuscan grape per eccellenza and expressed its ultimate potential, complimenting it with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The best selections are cherry picked according to harvest conditions in the individual terroirs and microclimates. The blend for Monte Antico is 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. The best selections are blended and aged 1 year in oak (80% in Slovenian barrels, 20% in barrique) with at least 6 months bottle age. This wine is consistently one of Italy’s better values.

  • Sangiovese is one of my favorite grapes. I probably consume more Sangiovese ... ... as evidenced by both eh Monte Antico and Barco reale, two classic Sangiovese blends that have relied upon small additions of international varieties for years, and with fabulous results. At this price it’s often fiscally impossible to produce the kind of sangio... • Monte Antico Rosso 2009

    Snoothrank:

85% sangiovese, 10% cabernet sauvignon, 5% Merlot Interestingly this is both dark and leathery as well as being spicy and bright on the nose with plenty of black currant and slightly jammy strawberry fruit. very focused on entry, with a whiff of oak accompanying the taut berry fruit. the tannins are very well managed here and the acid as well o... • Monte Antico Rosso 2009

    Snoothrank:

Italian blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is dry but not overly dry. There is medium body with few layers of complexity. The nose is jam and pepper with a palate of jam, plums, and peppers. I am barely able to say a medium finish. Not a bad wine for weekday Italian night. Read More

  • Monte Antico Rosso 2009

    Snoothrank:

This is a 2009 Tuscan Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Savignon blend. It has a deep ruby hue with a mid to tight rim variation. Bold fruity notes of plum and black cherry with a slight hint of vanilia and coffee and balanced acidity. The time for this wine is now to 2016. Best served chilled to 56 degrees, and served with a veal parmigiana with... Read More

  • In past posts here on the Forum I have confessed that I regularly drink inexpensive wines.  In fact, I have been doing less of that, lately, but last night I picked one out of the rack that, pretty much, blew me away;  Epicuro 2009 Salice Salentino -- US$4.99 at Trader Joe's.This wine is a blend of Negroamaro (80%) and Malvasia Nera (20%) grapes... • Monte Antico Colle Rosso di Montepulciano 2007

    Snoothrank:

Hosted our first Thanksgiving as a Wedded couple and served this wine in Jerabaum format. Alone, the wine is dry, but served with the variety of flavors of Thanksgiving, the Toscano pairs very well. An easy drinking wine with a pleasing non-discript structure, balancing the fantastic meal we prepared. The 3L bottle could have aged for quite a... Read More
