Mogen David is an American fortified wine with an ABV of 13-20%, and is the “pride of Westfield, New York.” Nicknamed “Mad Dog 20/20,” this is the quintessential “bum wine,” said to be as “majestic as the cascading waters of a drain pipe.” “Inexpensive” is another polite description for this beverage, which is available in Banana Red, Kiwi Lemon, Orange Jubilee, Strawberry Kiwi, Lightning Creek, Ruby Grapefruit, and the classic Red Grape flavors. The wines have the mouthfeel of a Persian cat, with a similarly sharp, agonizing, and flat-faced finish. Recommended pairings: foraged marshmallows cooked over an open flame garbage receptacle, dentist’s toothpaste, and proximity to potable water.

  • Mogen David Sour Apple NV

A rare vintage that may have a peculiar aroma, but with a hint of spice and the lip smacking pucker of sour apples. This is a delectable choice. Alas only challenged by the bling bling blue raspberry variety...Mix the combination of airy goodness with a slice of bread and a spread of canned meat and one has an entire evening of pleasure ahead. • I once worked for Irv Schwartberg, who once owned Mogen David and has previously invested Real Lemon. He was the largest independent distributor of Toyota in the U.S. in the early 70s, when I was his PR chief. Irv made three independent fortunes in his life, which is more than most can say.
