Mission Estate is the birthplace of New Zealand wine, when our founders built the first winery in Hawke's Bay in 1851. We are very proud to be New Zealand's oldest winemaker. In one of the most sustainable wineries in the country we create our current collection of Mission Estate, Vineyard Selection, Reserve and Jewelstone award-winning wines. With advanced viticultural practices and a progressive winemaking team, we have a long-standing reputation for quality and over-delivering at every price point. Housed in an elegantly restored historic seminary building with sweeping views of Napier, Mission Estate offers visitors a year round complete wine experience. A visit to the cellar door provides an opportunity to try the extensive range of wines and for those interested in history, the twice daily historic walk is a must. Lunch or dinner can be enjoyed seven days in the renowned Mission restaurant, and the adjoining Chapel provides the ideal venue for a picturesque wedding reception or conference Read more »

  • . . . and, boy, are my arms tired.I don't know when I first heard the term "Super Tuscan."  I'm guessing that it was 10-12 years ago.  I really did not know what it meant--me being very focussed on my California world.I did, of course, learn that a Super Tuscan was a wine that was made from grapes that were outside the Tuscany tradition--specifi... just finished the last glass of a huntaway viognier 2010 as I opened the 2011 mission estate gewurztraminer. As I raised the glass to my mouth the spicey floral aromas almost knocked me out putting the older(maybe thats why) viognier to shame.the Mission estate wine was fantastic maybe a little overripe and oily but the light aromatic and spicy t... • A couple of news items I was pondering today.First, Robert Parker came out with his ratings for the 2009 Bordeaux vintage. Ever the masochist, I decided to go look at some prices in the marketplace after the ratings were released. Some samplings:2009 Chatau Latour                        100 points                  $21,500 a case2009 Chateau Marg... Read More

  • Mission Estate Winery Chardonnay Hawkes Bay Reserve 2009

    Snoothrank:

Open on the nose with rather earthy, lightly foresty aromas under a nice hard mineral/steel note, accenting apple fruit and topped with light smoke nuances. This is somehow intense but with a since of delicacy. On the palate there is lovely purity and cut as this offers up lightly earthy apple peel notes, firm citron pith and a touch of quince,... • Mission Estate Winery Syrah Hawkes Bay 2009

    Snoothrank:

Toasty, cocoa, white pepper and pretty clear wild raspberry and redcurrant fruit aromas on the nose here. Cool and tense on entry with a fine elegant and fresh feel. This is really transparent with gentle meatiness backed up by soft berry fruit. Tannins here are really fine, ripe, small yet tense, though a bit more flavor intensity wouldnt hurt.... Read More
