  Trapiche Malbec Mendoza Argentina 2008

  Snoothrank: Starting at $7^.79

  Very creamy on the nose. Initally a little strawberry hit but was soon taken over by leatheriness. Sat nicely on the mid palate. Very dark, heavy fruits - blackberries especially. Decent tannins and good structure - a nice surprise given my recent experiences with Argentinian wines.

  I'd like to go south on the New World and suggest a couple of favorites: Santa ... Brut (Familia Zuccardi) Mendoza, Argentina; Santa Carolina Brut (Chile) and Venezuela's Pomar Brut Nature.   Malbec is still a specialty, niche market, though the Argentines seem to be ... muggings of wine tourists in Mendoza and other producing areas as certain local 'entrepreneurs' try to deal with employment issues in their own ways. That kind of thing does wonders for industry... Sophisticated business skills will make it possible for certain winemakers and wineries to survive, but it seems like a lot of attention that should ideally be focused on making better wines will have to be spent elsewhere    (hide)

One word of warning though I visited this time last year and a lot of tourist were reporting muggings.   ...but possibly a bad sign for the North Amercian economy. While things may be "up" in Mendoza, they represent a corresponding "down" for the US of A - assuming your source of information on the imbibing habits of bankers is close to the mark.
