  • Melville Syrah Estate Verna's Santa Barbara County 2013

More purple than red color. Something of a musty, fungal nose. On the tongue this wine seems viscous. Red berry fruit and blueberryOK, not red--on entry. It is close to being annoyingly sweet, but, somehow, it backs away. Earthy mid-palate. Another pretty-easy-to-drink-but-not-terribly-sophisticated wine. Read More

  • Thanks all for the concern but we are fully enjoying everything so far. I'm writing up these notes after tasting hours and before or after dinner so no problem missing out on any fun. Day two was as good as day one or even better. Another great breakfast to lay in a good base, then a walk around town (didn't take very long) and then off to our f... Read More

  • Had a great first full day here in south central California. Started off with a very good breakfast at the ForFriends B&B in Santa Ynez. Too early for any of the tasting rooms to be open so we headed down to Jalama beach for some salt air and scenery. Beautiful beach with some interesting campsites and about a half dozen surfers enjoying some mo... Read More

  • Mellville Syrah Estate Verna's 2011

Lots of light coming through the glass suggest, perhaps incorrectly, a medium-bodied red winea la a Pinot Noir. Something of a vegetative (green bell pepper or asparagus) and nutty (almond/walnut) nose. Initial mouth sensation supports the medium-body forecast. Then red cherry flavor with a thickness like caramel. After a few sips I realize t... Read More

  • Melville Chardonnay Estate Sta. Rita Hills 2012

Melon, caramel nose suggests heavy oaking and full ML. On the tongue, I initially get the melon and caramel thing, but, then, a delightfully refreshing hit of lemon/grapefruit acid. Lingering pleasant aftertaste. While I feared this would be an overblown California Chardonnay, I find that this one is more like a white Burgundy. Read More

  • Pinot noir has become the great alternative. When you don’t want to give another big red wine as a gift it opens up a world of possibilities. Immediately appreciated by name alone, Pinot seems to have developed a certain cachet as the thinking man’s red wine, though there is little evidence to support that. Perhaps it comes from the history that... Read More
