Michael McCay and his family have farmed in Lodi for 20 plus years. Michael came to Lodi in the mid 1980s, started making wine in 1994 and launched the McCay Cellars label in 2007. From the beginning, Michael’s winemaking style has involved native fermentation...discovering and exploring the layers and trueness of this "old world style" winemaking. Concentrating on Zinfandel and Rhone varietals has become a passion at McCay Cellars. Lodi has some of California’s best climate for producing wine grapes. The Mokelumne Rivers’s sandy loam soil along with the Delta’s cool breezes provide the perfect and unique environment for growing wine grapes. Lodi's beautiful hot days during the summer months along with cool nights  (an average of 57 degrees) help Lodi offer a wonderful climate for wine grapes…especially Zinfandel and Rhone varietals.  McCay Cellars produces small case lots, typically less than four hundred cases per lot (total production 4500 cases Read more »

  • Mccay Cellars Viognier 2014

The wine is a pale amber in the glass while the nose is a rather subdued combination of pear and violets. The taste is quite well developed, with lovely flavors of pear, violet and a good bit of minerality. It's not as crisp and shocking to the palate like some white wines can be, but rather has more subdued acidity and a full mouthfeel that m... Read More

  • Hey, I hear that VTs are coming back, with one scheduled for March!  Not to steal the thunder, so I won't leak what the region/grape is going to be (regulars, watch your mail boxes if you live in the US), but it's going to be good if my inbox is any indication.I'm opening up the floor to ask the question, "Who do you think will be the host?"  Ma... • Mccay Lodi Native Zinfandel Trulux Vineyard 2012

Mineral on the nose with smoky undertones to the lightly floral, green edged fruit that is framed with lovely earthy, cheese rind accents. Spicy and bright and slightly medicinal in the mouth, with a little green herb antiseptic accent on the rather high toned palate. This is rich with clear fruit on the palate, red cherry fruit that shows gorg... Read More

  • Mccay Cellars Contention Lodi Zinfandel 2010

Oaky on the nose, lending a hickory nut and juniper tone to the gamy fruit. While a touch soft, on entry this turns out to have great acidity, making it much more lively in the mouth than the nose suggests, showing fine black currant and wild raspberry in a juicy style, with soft tannins. While the finish is a bit short, it is powerful and fresh... Read More
