The vision The dream of owning a winery capable of producing world-class wine was nurtured in London and Tokyo, and translated into the reality of Matahiwi Estate in the late 1990s. Wellington-raised, former investment banker Alastair Scott had always fancied a wine cellar. Sampling a range of wines styles while working in London sparked interest further at a time when Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc was first making international waves. Any potential vineyard venture had to make sound economic sense so the Pinot Noir aficionado "parked the idea" for several years and finally left Tokyo in 1997 to put the foundations in place. Alastair returned to Wellington and planted vines on a former dairy farm at Opaki, north of Masterton, in the neighbouring Wairarapa.
