On a brightly moonlit Tuesday evening at around eleven o'clock on the Barossa to Clare road, two young blokes are cruising their way to work the midnight shift for the last vintage of the century, in a beat-up old Toyota Corolla “The Brown Bullet”. During the drive home, we would often crave a soft slurpy wine to wash down a hard night's work. Out of this ideal wedecided to join forces and make a Grenache based wine to be enjoyed whenever the mood takes hold. As such Massena Vineyards first wine “The Moonlight Run” was born. The two of us have been mates since High School and have been producing Barossa wine since that initial vintage in 1999, concentrating on the traditional values and techniques which have made the wines of this region unique. We source our fruit from dedicated growers in the North Western Barossa areas of Greenock, Kalimna and Koonunga Hill, providing fruit from dry farmed, low yielding vines up to 120 years of age. Whilst we work mostly with traditional Barossa varieties Read more »

  • Massena Shiraz Barossa Valley the Eleventh Hour 2009

    Snoothrank:

$35 purchased direct from winery. Fruit from sixty year old vines in Greenock. Intense black ruby colour. A medium+ youthful fragrance of creme de cassis, Spanish plums, summer florals and a hint of pastis. The colour clings to the glass, leaving a trail of lovely fine legs. A silky texture, this is a dry, full-bodied wine with vibrant acidity a... Read More

  • Massena Shiraz Barossa Valley the Eleventh Hour 2005

    Snoothrank:

This is a delightfully smooth and elegant wine of distinct clarity and focus that still manages great grip and zing. Rich, pure dark fruit on the nose and palate, along with fresh ground pepper on both as well, make this wine an immediately pleasing and balanced composition with a wonderful lingering finish. At 30 minutes, dark chocolate, tar,... Read More

  • Massena Shiraz the 11th Hour 2008

    Snoothrank:

The 2008 11th Hour is a rich and elegant example of Barossa Shiraz. The nose opens to dark chocolate, cocoa and tobacco, with wafts of blueberry and cherry passing through. The palate is sappy but lively, with enough pepper and spice to sustain the journey through thick blue fruits and blackberries, plus coffee and chocolate. At three hours, t... Read More

  • Massena Viognier Barossa Valley the Surly Muse 2009

    Snoothrank:

Nose: apricots, peaches, lychee, aromatic and delicate. Palate: sharp, fresh peach, apricot. Minerally acid, sharp and lively. A beautiful fresh, lively wine that is great with food. Quite a different style of viognier than you might be used to, here the winemakers attempted to avoid the ripe and potentially over-flaccid flavours sometimes assoc... Read More

  • Massena 2the Moonlight Run" Barossa Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Nose: meaty, earthy, ripe red berries, cherry, dried figs, liquorice. Palate: Plum, dried fig, tar, raisins, liquorice, with an elegant minerally acid. Very sweet juicy red fruit on the start, with drying savoury tannins on the finish. Good tannin length, beautifully structured and balanced. An interesting and complex wine. Read More
