Martinborough Vineyard has won the Pinot Noir trophy at the 2009 Tri Nations Wine Challenge for its 2007 Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Noir. The event, held in Sydney, is an exclusive competition for a hand selected range of the very best wines from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Internationally acclaimed wine writers and judges Bob Campbell MW of New Zealand, Huon Hooke of Australia and Michael Fridjhon of South Africa selected the best wines of each variety from their own country. The judging is then done blind by the three selectors along with Chairman of judges Robert Joseph, to rate the wines in their order of preference. – Description from Kursulla

  • Pinot noir has become the great alternative. When you don’t want to give another big red wine as a gift it opens up a world of possibilities. Immediately appreciated by name alone, Pinot seems to have developed a certain cachet as the thinking man’s red wine, though there is little evidence to support that. Perhaps it comes from the history that... Read More

  • Escarpment Pinot Noir "Kupe" Martinborough 2009

    Snoothrank:

Rhubarb, earthy, beet root, a little olive, definitely some astringency on the nose, savory, rich, a little sweeter and denser than the Escarpment, less cut and energy too, some black olive character, rhubarb and beet root in the. Big, rich, little powdery, dense and chewy almost cocoa like in the mouth. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Tight, touch of powdered cherry sugar, wood, spice, hint of age, rich, broad and high, great inner mouth perfume, wild cherry, plum, herbs, a touch of meaty extract, superb tannin ripeness, powerful but still retiming a sense of delicacy, really fine drive to the cherry fruit on the backend, finishes with rich flavor and continuing delicacy of t... • Margrain Pinot Noir Martinborough Home Block 2009

    Snoothrank:

Pretty perfumes, earthy, lightly smoky, floral, rhubarb, strawberry and raspberry, a little wood, a touch blocky in the mouth but light and lively, really attractive freshness here with an edge of sage and spice topping the vivid raspberry fruit, very Oregon styled, rose pets in the mouth, plummy finish, vibrant and zesty, impressive fruit density Read More
