Martin Estate
MARTIN ESTATE produces an ultra premium balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. Not a cookie cutter wine that followes the herd, this is a wine for people that enjoy the taste of fruit versus heavy oak and high alcohol.
The massive pre-prohibition Chateau was built in 1887 by pioneer vintner Henry H. Harris. The winery, which is not open to the public, is located in Block B of the original Caymus Land Grant in the heart of Napa Valley's famous Rutherford Appellation. Martin Estate wines are estate grown, produced and bottled, and releases are limited to the yield of the eight acre first growth Puerta Dorada Vineyard that surrounds the Estate.
Award winning winemaker Aaron Pott is in charge of the state of the art winery and vineyard. The wines are terroir driven, reflecting the sense of place where they originated. "Do you know where your wine has been? " (R) And don't believe the map as that is not the correct location.

Skeptical I recently visited the Napa Valley for the first time in about three years. Like many wine geeks, I’m jaded when it comes to Napa Valley wines, almost programed to dismiss them based on their success. You see, to be a true wine geek has somehow morphed into cultivating an exclusive appreciation of obscure wines. Orange wines? Bring the... Read More

I‘ve recently been tasting through recent Cabernet releases from the Napa Valley and have been struck by the appeal of many of the wines. This is due in small part to the string of vintages, cooler than typical, that winemakers have recently been working with. But there might be more to it than that. I’ve written up my thoughts on the matter and... Read More

A couple of news items I was pondering today.First, Robert Parker came out with his ratings for the 2009 Bordeaux vintage. Ever the masochist, I decided to go look at some prices in the marketplace after the ratings were released. Some samplings:2009 Chatau Latour 100 points $21,500 a case2009 Chateau Marg... Read More

After watching Levi Dalton’s interview with Raj Vaidya, I had to go and check out Daniel’s list. I knew from the beginning that it was going to be filled with big guns, but I aimed to seek out the values for economical wine drinkers, like myself, who want to experience Daniel without blowing a huge hole in their budgets. Predictably, this ... Read More

Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris. We’ve talked about the wines before and in all honesty it can get boring to talk about Pint Gris, unless you shake things up a bit. Most of us instinctively turn toward Italy to get our Grigio fix, a reaction that has been beaten into us through incessant advertising and media placements. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not ... Read More
