  • I'd stay away from the Marcarini Barolos.  GdP has them mostly on the downslope.  When Elvio Cogno left Marcarini, it was over differences in philosophy, mostly over focusing on quality vs. profitability.  The Cognos are probably a bit harder to find, but GdP has them on the upswing, and my notes on the '10s were very laudatory as well. I notice... • I'll be in Piemonte from 5/13 to 5/24. I liked GdP's article today about Marcarini Baroli tasted recently and previously in 2007.  Of course, great Barolo at $40 ruins my idea that there's a market for nebbiolo grown outside of Italy and priced as something more reasonable than Monfortino or Gaja. • Marcarini Nebbiolo Barolo Brunate 1964

    Snoothrank:

This smelled strongly of bananas, vinegar, and VA. Off putting is an understatement and the mouth was no better featuring harsh acids and a touch feel though this was quite rich. Thankfully there was little finish. A defective bottle and one I will refrain from scoring. My experience with this vintage has been troubling with only one particularl... Read More

  • Marcarini Nebbiolo Barolo Brunate 1964

    Snoothrank:

Ethereal on the nose with subtle expressions of smoke, apricot, freshly cut blond tobacco mineral earth, and sweet herbs coming together seamlessly over an underlying orange scented mist. On the palate this exudes elegance with subtle red cherry fruit and bitter cherry notes flecked with slightly medicinal notes, hints of black tea, and moments ... Read More

  • About 2 yrs. ago I opened a 1975 Marcarini Barolo and expected big things. I was disappointed because it was barely drinkable. My storage conditions are pretty good. A friend of mine brought over a few Barolos from other producers this past Christmas. They were from 1995, 1996, and 1998 and his wines are stored under ideal conditions. All of th...
