In Italian, “Macchia” means “the spot”. In Lodi, Macchia Winery has been earning a reputation as a spot where discriminating vino buffs can find small lots of high-quality vintages -- at some very reasonable prices. It is a tried-and-true strategy for making exceptional wines that Tim Holdener says is at the heart of his winemaking philosophy. Well aware of the potential for quality that was long ignored by many winemakers outside the Lodi area; the Holdeners make a variety of different Zinfandels, each sporting its own distinctive qualities. – Description from iskicm

  • After graduating from medical school and before beginning indentured service as a resident physician, my wife and I decided we should make a trip out to California wine country and Yosemite. So, a week after moving to my new residency location, we pawned off the two year old on the grandparents and headed for the hills of California. We arrived i... Read More

  • Last week I began my summer time look at Zinfandel by focusing on Mendocino and lake counties, two regions that have limited presence in the Zin lovers mind. Today I'm taking a different tact and focusing instead on lodi, a veritable Zin lovers paradise. Why you ask?Well simply put it's a region that not only has a great climate for Zinfandel, wi... • Macchia Lodi Native Zinfandel Noma Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Dry farmed on the east side Inky, powerful, and dark on a nose filled with black fruit, spicy, black pepper, and a whisper of herb. As bright and juicy as this may be it is undoubtedly the most powerful wine of the lineup. Filled with spicy dark, dried berry fruit, this offers an avalanche of spice on the long finish which is packed with candied... Read More

  • Macchia Zinfandel Lodi Mischievous Old Vine 2010

    Snoothrank:

Complex Zin from Lodi. Cherry on the nose with strong alcohol. On the palate, strong Bing cherries and plums with smoke and pepper. Silky tannins. Long finish. Would be 4.5 if alcohol wasn't as strong. Read More

  • Macchia Amorous Sangiovese 2011

    Snoothrank:

Fairly fruity nose with some hints of spice--sort of cinnamonny. Fruit explosion on the palate--cherry, blueberry. The wine has a "smooth" mouth feel, but it is not terribly rewarding. I am having difficulty trying to think what food this would match. It does not have sufficient acid that I would seek in, say, a Chianti. This may work with ... Read More

  • Recently I was pleasantly surprised by a visit to Lodi, California. Long the source of well-priced, consumer friendly wines, not to mention the boost they give many of our favorite national brands, Lodi continues to work mostly off the center stage of wine in the USA. There are many reasons for this of course, from consumer preferences to the gr... Read More

  • Macchia Dangerous Port Amador County Linsteadt Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Zinfandel and BarberaReticent and soft on the nose with a little marshmallow and subtle vanilla, licorice, fudge and candied fruit notes. This is smooth and polished in the mouth with a rich lightly sweet red fruited midpalate that turns plummy on the back end and onto the long finish. This is lovely and nuanced if a bit small in the mouth, ver... Read More

  • Macchia Flirtatious Late Harvest Zinfandel 2011

    Snoothrank:

5.5 grams sugar per liter RSCandied red fruit on the nose is wrapped in clove laced holiday spice. This is modestly sweet on entry with early juicy red fruit that are nicely balanced and recall cut red cherries little bit of red licorice rope, and a touch of powdered sugar. Theres a nice touch of tannin on the finish and this really does show n... Read More

  • Macchia Petite Sirah Lodi Rebellious 2009

    Snoothrank:

Dark black cherry and sweet oak aromas greet the nose picking up a touch of VA and complicating notes of dark plum and vanilla. This is lovely on entry with super fine balance, full base of tannins and good acids but this still comes off a little soft and weight. The midpalate is filled with earthy plum fruit, nuanced oak, a little peppery spic... Read More

  • Just tried the Macchia Delicious and it was just that! Yet another winner in their collection. Am looking forward to trying the Barbera (although I don't usually like wines that are too dry).

  • Macchia is one of the go to wineries in Lodi. Tim Holdener is not only a gifted winemaker, he and his wife Lani can be found there most weekends to meet and greet their customers. There wine club members get treated well too. If you like big, bold, tasty wines, Macchia is your kind of winery.
