  • How long did you let the Les Pelerins breathe?About 30 seconds. What seems closed and reticent upon opening will be entirely different a few hours down the line.Probably true.  If b-i-l tried the remainder of the bottle, I'm sure he had a completely different experience. This was more of a convivial encounter than a wine geek one.  I may be more m... • How long did you let the Les Pelerins breathe? This is the 2nd label of Lafon-Rochet but should still be interesting. The owner also owns Pontet Canet which used to be one of my $20 standbies (back 20 or so years ago) but has since skyrocketed as others found out how delicious it can be.Its maker's style is such that even at 13 years since harve... • Yep. Although some of that Bordeaux that's pretty cheap deserves to be out of business too! Bottom line is that there's a lot of good wine in the world these days and between $15 and $25 you can do really well. Between $10 and $15 it's harder, but still possible, as long as you look for discounts.Big Cabs from CA? Nope. But if you're stuck with ... Read More

  • Bottom line, look elsewhere for cabs at that price. Without having tasted every Paso Robles possibility, I'm sure I'd rather have some Bordeaux outliers or Aussie options or certain Italian super-Tuscans. Unfortunately Chono went haywire, but maybe even a Chilean, though lots of chaff compared to wheat there still.  Let K&L and others go to town... Read More

  • Tradition tends to reign supreme in the French wine world (just witness the old-money regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy), but the country's wine classification system got a shake up in 2009 when a Europe-wide reform was passed, standardizing the diverse nomenclature for the various quality designations within each of the wine-producing countries.... • Once again, the lack of back-channel info communicable in email and BB posting, even chat, strikes a blow. I was in too much of a rush, and in shock to hear you saying something like that, to parse the 'um, yeah'.Snooth could always offer all the emoticon-ish options of, say, Line. If there's anyone left doing coding at Snooth they could work on... Read More

  • I'm a bit surprised this conversation has not received more attention.  I guess only a few of us have ever found a wine we didn't like.Well, Emark, it is Snooth: Drink Great Wine.  We took them at their word.Funny how no one ever sells on the tag line, "X at its worst," or tries to sell things as "Rough as Burlap," always as "Smooth as silk." I'... • So I am going to take your side on some things, AS, but I wouldn't call a multi billion dollar corporation anyones's "local."  Now, back in 1975 when there were a half dozen stores in Southern Cal.  (SFV to Santa Ana only), that would have made some sense. That aside, there are many good wines available at TJ's at very low prices.  The Epicurio l... • Hello all!Put together a nice little timeline of photo's from over the past several weeks in Sonoma County. I really do love Harvest time each year. Obviously in CA everyone is freaking out a little at the prospect of being fined, so I enjoy my new title of 'intern' for a couple of weeks to make sure safety is a must. Read More
