  • How many folks enjoy whiskey?  On my recent 'Retired Rides' this year, my buddy and I have visited several distilleries in Northern Virginia.  We plan to visit another one within a few weeks down in Fredericksburg VA.  You can imagine my interest when I saw this article in the Washington Post this morning - the number one whiskey in the world is... • In relative Tokyo terms I am right around the corner. Probably less than a 15min cab ride. Still it's off the beaten track, not easy to get to except by cab, and bottom-line-problem my schedule is crazy right now. Was up all day in the disaster area around Sendai yesterday planning parks for permanent housing projects to replace the temporary, t... Read More

  • A Frenchman and an Italian walk into a wine bar, and, in this case, they order a glass of Rolland and Galarreta. Renowned French winemaker Michel Rolland and Spanish wine maven Javier Galaretta will release this month their own line of wines under the “Rolland Galaretta” label. The new venture includes wines from Spain's Rioja, Rueda and Ribera ... Read More

  • Givin' yourself away, Santa!  "What seems closed and reticent upon opening will be entirely different a few hours down the line."Probably true.  If b-i-l tried the remainder of the bottle, I'm sure he had a completely different experience. This was more of a convivial encounter than a wine geek one.  I may be more meticulous on some of the other ... • How long did you let the Les Pelerins breathe? This is the 2nd label of Lafon-Rochet but should still be interesting. The owner also owns Pontet Canet which used to be one of my $20 standbies (back 20 or so years ago) but has since skyrocketed as others found out how delicious it can be.Its maker's style is such that even at 13 years since harve... • Yep. Although some of that Bordeaux that's pretty cheap deserves to be out of business too! Bottom line is that there's a lot of good wine in the world these days and between $15 and $25 you can do really well. Between $10 and $15 it's harder, but still possible, as long as you look for discounts.Big Cabs from CA? Nope. But if you're stuck with ... Read More

  • Bottom line, look elsewhere for cabs at that price. Without having tasted every Paso Robles possibility, I'm sure I'd rather have some Bordeaux outliers or Aussie options or certain Italian super-Tuscans. Unfortunately Chono went haywire, but maybe even a Chilean, though lots of chaff compared to wheat there still.  Let K&L and others go to town... Read More
