We are at the eastern extremity of the Russian River AVA, and close to the eastern end of the Dry Creek Valley AVA. This is an area of rolling hills with Southwest exposure. We are fairly high up the hill and whilst we are not frost free we seem to have averted major frost damage in recent years. The vines are head pruned (small bushes, no trellis wire). The vineyard is dry-farmed (no irrigation), relying on winter and spring rains to water the vines. Normally the vines are pruned in January and February and the cover crop of Fava beans, clover, vetch, chamomile and mustard is ploughed into the ground in March. Each vine is pruned so the major arms form the shape of a wineglass about 3-4 feet high. From this basis the canes form a leafy canopy with approximately two bunches of grapes per cane. • It's not often that I have a plan. Well, a detailed plan at least.. Some sort of a plan not being a requirement for those in this business. But a detailed plan, and over-arching theme for a visit to wine country can certainly come in handy.  This month’s, or rather last month’s theme was, surprisingly enough: Zinfandel. I say surprisingly becaus... Read More

  • Limerick Lane Russian River Zinfandel 2011

Intensely aromatic with spicy oak that is fairly prominent and a nice herbal hint under the vanilla all layered under lots of ripe, spicy blackberry fruit. Surprisingly light and fresh in the mouth with zesty red cherry fruit with a touch of rust supported by fine tannins. This is nicely aromatic in the mouth, with lovely purity tot he fruit and... In years past we would show up around 11:15, park close and hit the tent before the crowd built. Well not this year. The front parking lot filled up as we approached so we parked across the road and hoofed it in. The place was a zoo from the mom... Read More

2009 Vintage Strawberry and Plum and other berries aroma. On the palate it is jammy with fruits and berries everywhere. The tannins kick in but are not too intense. A nice finish and no sign of the 14.6% alcohol.A nicely structured Zin. Read More
