https://www.facebook.com/leone.decastrisSalice Salentino, a small village in Salento rich in vineyards and olive groves, is the landscape giving life to Leone de Castris’ wine tradition. It is exactly here, on the very spot where today’s cellar stands, that in 1665 Duke Oronzo, Earl of Lemos, gave birth to the company. He got enchanted by this landscape and decided to sell all his properties in Spain in order to draw the best from the Salentine rich terroir. He began to plant new vines, olive trees and wheat along 5 thousand hectares‘ properties, not only in Salice, but also in Guagnano, Veglie, Villa Baldassarri, Novoli and San Pancrazio.

  • Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Riserva 2011

A hint of molasses and cherry on the nose with a clump of earth as well. Easy drinking style and quite fruity, with pleasant red berry and cherry notes and a finish with a touch of clay. 86 pts. Read More

  • Italian Roses, that's what’s for dinner. And before you go there let ... one case, the seriously good Leone de Castris, that was not needed since their Rose dates from 1943! Be that as it may, what I also found fascinating during this tasting was being able to go back and compare the sugar and acid levels of the wines after having tasted them.... Read More

  • Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Riserva 2009

Continuing a virtual trip into Puglia ... into better DOC country than usual for this heel of Italy... the wine at hand greets the nose as thickly vinous, medicinal and blackcurrant. The entry is quite smooth with placid tannin but a little extra warmth (alcohol) overlaying the slightly bitter blackcurrant flavours. Flavour lingers long, with... Read More

  • Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Rosso Maiana 2008

A somewhat different Italian red blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. It starts out a little thin and metallic with a hint of licorice. There's a good bit of earthiness on the mid-palate along with dried black plums and raisin. Read More

  • Leone de Castris Primitivo Primitivo di Manduria Villa Santera 2010

Villa Santera had a deep red color that goes towards purple. On the nose, I smelled very little vanilla and nothing. The palate had aggressive, unpleasing tannins and strong alcohol notes while being very dry.So we sat there and thought: "What can we do with this wine? It's undrinkable". We decided to chill it down to around 8°C and gave the win... Read More
