Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.

The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote Read more »

  • Layer Cake Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

I love the Layer Cake Malbec, it's absolutely divine. When I saw the Cabernet Sauvignon, I thought I was on to something big. Well, not so, although it's all they say it is as far as tasting notes it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to depth. It's not bad say with a salami sandwich but I prefer a more robust cab with some structure. Disa... Read More

  • More like Layer Cake. With Locations it's Dave Phinney, with Layer Cake it's Jayson Woodbridge. They go out to the vineyards and they'll make some decisions on picking, etc. If they don't like what they get that year, they may not make the wine - there was no Layer Cake Shiraz in 2007 for example  Whether they actually pull every lever and clean... • Layer Cake wines are THE best value (ie. the highest quality wines for the lowest price) that you can find anywhere. They are made by the same team that produces Hundred Acre which is one of the greatest cabernet's in the world. If you can find these wines, buy em before it's too late cause they sell out fast.
