Lawer Family Wines

Betsy and David Lawer, owners of Lawer Family Wines, have a true passion for wine. Their goal wasn’t just to sell their wine, but it was also to make wine that they could enjoy and take pride in creating. The Lawers bought the vineyard, a small plot located five miles northwest of Calistoga in Napa Valley, in 2002, but it required a lot of work. Thankfully, they found John Pina, their vineyard manager who was able to bring the land back to life.

Lawer Family Wines produces several brands of wine, including Duck Shack, Three Coins, and Hooker. Each of these brands has a history, and the names aren’t just pulled from thin air. Three Coins, for example, was named after the work that Betsy used to do for her father, a gold miner. Thanks to Larry Levin, the winemaker for all three brands, Lawer Family Wines has been very successful at transforming the Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Zinfandel grapes into award-winning wines. Not only is the vineyard used to produce those Read more »

  • Hooker Old Boys Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Dusty and chalky red fruit aromas of mostly cherry and raspberry. This carries a very vibrant topnote of bright acidity and loads of red fruit character, with dried notes of tart cranberry and raspberry, firm lengthy tannins and big acidity. This is a bold, high acid wine that will continue to soften with a few more years in the bottle. Read More

  • Hooker Chardonnay Breakaway 2010

Very lightly scented with Asian pear and apple fruit on the nose, along with some face cream and a low nuttiness. This has a pronounced acidic spine and bright citrus flavors early on that are joined by notes of steel and seashells. The minerality is certainly intriguing, but the acid is high even for me. Apple fruit emerges on the mid-palate. F... Read More

  • Hooker Old Boys Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Peppery earthy nose supported by a plum backbone. Where's the fruit? In the mouth it exhibits nice spice, tea flavors, and big tannins and a peppery finish but to me there's a huge gap where the fruit should be. Read More

  • Hooker Old Boys Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Tootsie roll aromas and a mellow palate of blackberries, ripe cherries and tight acidity. At the price point I might look elsewhere, but it's not a bad wine, the high point being the finish. Read More

  • Hooker Old Boys Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

The nose is somewhat mild, but has very pleasing notes of plum, kind of powdery, with cardamom. Dark fruits and roast pork on the mouth. Pretty well balanced, I like the notes of butteriness. Expecting it to be bolder, but it stays kind of quiet. Read More

  • 2006  Terlato & Chapoutier lieu dit Malakoff Shiraz This starts off with a decidedly oaky nose, but there is a nice black pepper tone and plenty of stemmy, almost floral notes, with a real oystershell mineral edge that helps the wild berry and dried plum fruit to pop. This is really tight up front with a very lean, crisp feel that is decidedly u... Read More
