Cubans, with Venezuelan rum, Lagavulin or good Armagnac, for those who want them afterwards. I never really try to make any sophisticated efforts to match wines to foods on Thanksgiving, nor even worry too much about the progression of whites or reds, since everyone will have different wines in their glasses at the same time. Just wines that I have on hand, that I think the people at the table will like, and that I want to try. Too many people with too many tastes involved, and the intimate frestival of a dinner is generally a gastronomic blowout of potlatch proportions, anyway. More about enjoying the blowout with close friends and family, and not worrying about discipline of any sort, whether of wine appreciation or what have you...    (hide)

  Lagavulin 16 Anys Islay

  Had this during a trip in Brussels. I went back instantly to survivalsessions years ago in the Belgian woods. Smokey, peaty, lots of flavors are battling to be recognized, smoothand impressive. Not everbody's friend I guess but it seems I'm a sucker for the Islay's whiskys..

And what I choose to drink now when I have the option (I totally agree with Mark about the latter). Though I have been known to accept Glenlivets and Taliskers when pressed... ;-) Has anyone noticed a change in Macallan in recent years? I don't enjoy it as much as I used to, and have wondered if that's because Suntory now owns it...    (hide)

A few years back when traveling through Heathrow I found a double matured Lagavulin that was so silky it was too easy to drink. They put out a new bottling every year for a few years, but there was never enough to be exported to the States. My favorite of all is Port Ellen, a distillery that closed in the early 80s. You can still find them around, but at a price becoming more dear by the day. Peat, seaweed and iodine and hey have the longest finish I have ever experienced    (hide)

  Good list. You can get whiskey flights at some bars in NYC so that might be a ... on the Scotch is a plug for Lagavulin. What a great whisky
