Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States.

In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions Read more »

  • What happened with Chardonnay is a longer story but Kendall Jackson popularized a style with a lot of oak and some residual sugar. That became the model for many and it's still popular today.Chablis existed long before and as OT points out, it sees some oak.The issue isn't "oaked" vs "non-oaked" because there's more to it than just that. The but... Read More

  • In defense of Oaked and Buttery Chardonnays I must say that "I like it".  I know the trend is for the unoaked stainless steel ferment to be on the rise and people are saying that they prefer it over the "Other kind". That may be the trend but the Oaked and Buttery varieties are still my favorites although the unoaked brands are ok also.So in fin... Read More

  • Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Pinot Gris 2014

    Snoothrank:

Quite floral and pungent aromas of rose petals, violets and a touch of honey. In the mouth it's smooth and continues that floral character, but adds to that green apple, lemon and more tropical notes of pineapple and melon. Read More

  • I have had the pleasure the last few days to taste some nice wines courtesy of ... named 'Collage' by Kendall Jackson which went down gorgeously without trace in one sitting. That was a star for very different reasons to the Crozes, which had sheer class. Opened a 2005 Cotes Du Rhone Villages by Gabrielle Meffre today but it hadn't the spice I... Read More

  • I'm sorry that I ignored this one for a few days, Symie, but I really don't remember the flavor profile of the California Sauterne.  I'm sure I had some, but, heck, that was 40 years ago.  If it was dry and tart you may have some luck with Sauvignon Blanc.  That is widely available at a lot of price points.  If there is a Trader Joe's near you, ... • So my friends and I were talking. I have the WORST luck finding wines I love at any (normal) price point.  Most of the time I drink wines that are just-OK, and it seems like most of my friends have the same experience.I was wondering if everyone else had the same problem we do so I’m taking a poll:What percentage of those are wines you absolutel... • Just a salute to Chad at KJ Wine Estates. He was very informative and patient. We had a great time and enjoyed the grounds. Recommend to anyone staying near the Santa Rosa area to visit. A nice surprise for us was the KJ Meritage which we purchased and enjoyed thoroughly.
