The winery was named by Joe Swan when he founded it thirty years ago. Joe came to winemaking from an unlikely background. In 1967 he purchased a small farm on Laguna Road near the town of Forestville in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. The property consisted of 13 acres of old Zinfandel vines, fruit trees and pasture along with several structures including an old barn and a nearly 100 year old house. In addition to the physical attributes, it included an interesting history. The house once housed the post office of the village of Trenton along with the general store and telephone exchange. The first few vintages were made in the cellar of the house and then later in the barn. In 1974, with the help of a few friends (including Joel Peterson who would make his first Ravenswood wines here in 1976), he erected what we jokingly refer to as the tin shed. Joe wasn't interested in fancy buildings, formal gardens, and other fancy trappingsÑhe only wanted a safe, secure place to make wine. – Description from Alejandro

  • Snapped this shot a couple months ago when we were racking some Pinot for Ancillary and Patiné. Check out the shadow, "Fill 'er up!" So what Pinot Noir have you enjoyed lately. • Here's the report from our trip to the Russian River area and Mendocino. Our normal routine is to split one tasting and then buy one or two bottles of what tasted best.  I find that we can do an adequate job of tasting, visit a decent number of wineries and still be standing at the end of the day.  We visit places which welcome walk-ins and we al... • We're heading back to (my favorite wine region) Russian River the first weekend in October and are looking for advice on what to do and what to expect.  We've been to RRV several times but only during the off season.  Is there anything special we should do at this time of year, and conversely, is there anything we should avoid? •  We had a plan, get in early, get out early. It seems like a lot of people had the get in early plan. In years past we would show up around 11:15, park close and hit the tent before the crowd built. Well not this year. The front parking lot filled up as we approached so we parked across the road and hoofed it in. The place was a zoo from the mom... Read More

  •  Wow, we had a great time last night. Hopefully Foxall will have a chance to put his spin on things. I didn't take any notes, just 2 pictures but I lined up some of the dead soldiers this morning. 15 people, over 30 different wines and not a single dud except for a sweet/syrupy/candied 2001 Rosenblum Monte Rosso Zinfandel. But enough for the bad... Read More

  • Unlike with my pick for Wine of the Year, which is a wine that has moved me and changed my view of wine in some way, shape or form, I award my Winery of the Year selection to a winery that has had consumer interests at top of mind. This can be seen as a vague statement in that most wineries have their consumers’ interests at heart in one way or a...
