Located in the south-east corner of the Alexander Valley, our vines climb a steep gravel slope above the Russian River valley. • The eighth season of Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope has given me the opportunity to discover some destinations I’ve never visited and new sides to places I’ve known. This season’s fifteen new PBS episodes (grand total 106 now) span the globe from Asia to Europe and have offered me the chance to sample some novel tastes. Since I am always in search... Read More

  • If you have any doubt that Austrians love their wine, consider the fact that the Viennese vineyards were begun 2,000 years ago and they are the only significant producing vineyards in the world growing within a cosmopolitan center’s city limits. The vines are less than 20 minutes by car, bus or train from the heart of the city. Austria has four ... Read More

  • Oh dear, more good French wines well under $20, even after import across the Atlantic. I'm liking Chambers Street more and more, the more I visit their offerings. These guys seem to understand wine in ways that I do and like. In their essay below there's a link to a current Asimov article on Muscadet. It's also well worth jumping to and reading.... Read More

  • Freemark Abbey was actually quite good back in the late '60s, all through the '70s and into the '80s. They were even included in the 1976 Judgment of Paris where they took 10th place, amongst some very heavyweight competition. • I know of a number of people in the craft beer world who are purposely introducing brettanomyces into the brewing equation to see how interesting things can get. 'Wild yeast' beers are barely (not) controllable but they are rapidly becoming cult items. Case in point, this quote about a Sierra Nevada brew, taken from Good Morning America: Sierra ... Read More

  • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit...
